what the devil is a minnow trap and where does one procure one? I have to go to a bday party for a seven-year-old today. And as is usually the case with these things, I call to ask the mom what I should get as a present. Now, I'm thinking a DVD or maybe a matchbox playset. But no, the kid wants a minnow trap. Seriously? A minnow trap? Sadly I'm guessing you don't pick one up in the camping aisle at SuperTarget.

I don't know, but that sounds like something my son would like. What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

My youngest has already been invited to several birthday parties in our new locale. The interesting thing, my wife informs, is that everyone just gives books (usually paperbacks) at birthday parties (unless its a no gift party and then you bring canned goods for the food bank or something like that). I must admit I consider this quite delightful and charming. Maybe its not all the surprising in a community of mostly MDs and academics ...

We had a fireman party for Jack 2 weeks ago....instead of presents, we asked people to give money for the firefighters here in town. They gave us a really good tour of the firehouse and we gave them some scratch.Originally posted by pelagius View PostMy youngest has already been invited to several birthday parties in our new locale. I used to make these as a kid. Just take a two liter bottle, cut the top of it off where it stops curving and becomes straight, then invert the cut off piece and reattach it to another two liter you have cut the bottom off of. The little buggers swim in, but not back out.
Like so:

Or you can do it this way too:
