  • Chris Buttars

Everyone's favorite Utah legislator and Eagle-Forum-hall-of-famer Chris Buttars has found a new windmill to tilt against. He is now a soldier in the culture war fighting to save Christmas:

I am amazed he got re-elected. But I have to admit that he is interesting.

I posted an 'Anybody but Buttars' sign in my front lawn. I was pissed when I found out I wasn't in his district. How the rest of West Jordan could vote him back is beyond my capability to think clearly.

Is there a "war" against Christmas? I don't know, but it seems that Christmas is being de-Christianized, the absolute reluctance by society to use the phrase "Merry Christmas" being the latest example.

I think he means well, but using the power of government (even though this is just a resolution) to tell retailers what they should and should not say during the holidays is misguided IMO.

Sure he's embarassing, but he's not a democrat. Many folks vote for the policies over the person.

Make that "party over the person". And that's a damn shame.

Here in Provo we had Ned Hill's wife, Claralyn, run for state house. She is a life-long Republican, running as a democrat on a conservative platform. In terms of experience, education, intelligence, etc. she was head and shoulders better than her opponent. She campaigned like crazy and got endorsements from a long list of prominent local figures (mostly Republicans). She lost 60-40.

Why didn't she challenge the incumbent for the GOP nomination, rather than switching parties?

              Ha. That's funny.

You obviously don't know how party politics work here in the compound. It's been like 30 years since we have had an actual run-off at the primary level. All candidates are hand-picked by the party bosses. And she was running against an incumbent. A guy who was hand-picked by Curt Bramble. The only possible option is to run as a democrat. And that is futile.

It's worse than that. Her opponent didn't even have to run a campaign the first time around. The previous legislator decided to step down when his term was up. Rather than stepping down prior to the election, he stayed in his office until one week after the election (he was unopposed). Then he resigned and this allowed the local party bosses (i.e., Bramble, Lockhart) to hand pick a replacement. Utah law allows this. In other words, they rigged the system to not only eliminate a real election, but to eliminate the chance of delegates to vote in the primary. It's unreal.

Wow, that sounds bad. You're right, I don't understand it so forgive me, I'm not trying to be difficult, but I don't understand why someone can't file as a Republican and challenge an incumbent in the primary. Sounds like you're saying that's an impossibility? Or are you just saying it's futile because the party bosses will torpedo your bid, and therefore not worth even attempting?

Living in Utah makes me want to register as a Democrat.

Yes. There is no way to beat an incumbent in Utah County (at the state legislature level) in the primary without the backing of the party bosses.

                            Butt-arse, it's an onomatopeia thing.

Not an example of Onomatopoeia. Onomatopoeia is a word like buzz or hiss that looks like the sound it describes.
