  • Urban Meyer doin' the 2 step...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4250905

Police blotter smack has bad karma attached, but 24 "incidents" in 4 years is almost as impressive and 2 MNC's. Competes with the Trail Gangsters in their heyday.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

As I posted on utefans about this, Meyer is all about Meyer. He won't do anything that will make his team weaker. If that means keeping thugs on his team, so be it.

Marty Johnson is the example I used. The guy had 2 DUIs, but he made Utah a better football team, so Meyer kept him on the team. Florida has more thugs and they make Florida a better team, so Meyer will not do the right thing and boot them.

The real problem is that the thugs got away with their behavior because they were better football players than anyone else while they were growing up. Had they been held accountable in their younger years, perhaps things wold be different in that they would understand that breaking the law means suffering consequences. But as I posted, Meyer won't make them suffer the consequences because that would make Meyer's team a worse team and Meyer's ego won't allow him to have a team that isn't good. He's rather win with thugs than lose with law abiding citizens.

Johnson provided a few laughs (Ute-hating gangs and all), but he seemed like an overall good guy, and my impression is that he got his act together. Is that correct? Or did he go Spivey-like and fall back down? [And FTR, I acknowledge some BYU ne'er-do-wells have stumbled later as well--but Spivey was the first that came to mind]. I'd like to think MJ went on to even better things in his post-football existence.

And why shouldn't he? There are no real consequences for having thugs on your team. Like you said, he won't change in any way that means losing football games, and that means he has zero incentive to keep his program clean.

You're right, Johnson did straighten up, got his degree and from my understanding is doing well for himself. My point was just that if MJ wasn't the type of running back that he was, he wouldn't have been given the extra chances to straighten up.

Does he go to Bishop Gorman or Las Vegas High School? They said Las Vegas High School on that video, but that would be strange.

Gorman is literally across the street from my house. I should go check out a game or two if he's still around.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.
