  • The Official Notre Dame Moving to a Conference Groundswell

This needs its own groundswell because ND has been rumored to be in negotiations with a number of different conferences and it's too cumbersome to track their latest moves in the other threads.

This is good news for BYU's deal for future scheduling with ND:

I've never understood why the Big10 and ND can't strike a deal, they seem like a perfect fit as ND already plays Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue on a regular basis, and games with Penn State, Ohio State, and Nebraska would be absolutely wonderful.

Why is this a good deal for the ND/BYU scheduling. Won't ND have the same situation as other BCS teams if they get in a conference?

Because the B1G won't let ND keep their TV rights.

Because if Notre Dame is signs a deal to play six games with a certain conference, they'll have to back out of the BYU deal. They're not going to drop Stanford, USC, et al.

My point exactly. So why would this be a good deal for BYU? Maybe I read your original post wrong.

I understand the TV roadblock, but it seems to me there has to be a compromise of splitting TV revenue which would benefit both sides. ND is fading fast.

I disagree. This does not need its own thread.

Because Notre Dame wants to stay independent. It's not like the Big Ten hasn't tried to get Notre Dame to join. The Big Ten waited, and waited some more, then allowed Nebraska to join...and is still waiting for Notre Dame to join.

The reason Notre Dame remains independent is because the great majority of Irish alumni want it so. As a private university, Notre Dame is much more dependent on alumi donations and wants to keep them happy. Notre Dame doesn't have a problem with scheduling, has BCS bowl access, and a large enough following to get its own media contract with NBC. Notre Dame could make more money by joining the Big Ten or Big 12 but other factors already mentioned outweigh receiving a bigger check.

Notre Dame and USC are playing when they always have.

Late season at USC, and in Oct in South Bend. That is how they've always done it.

Exactly. And the PAC 12 won't make them change it because they know it's a non-starter.

isn't Utah demanding to play BYU in November similar to BYU demanding to play Notre Dame home and away ever year, and forego the 2 for 1 deal.

Neither Utah or BYU carry the clout to make that happen.

Utah is the lap dog of the PAC-12, just as BYU is the lap dog of Notre Dame.

exactly, that's the same way they've scheduled it for as long as I can remember. They play early in the season when it's in Southbend, and the last game of the season when it's in LA. This is the one non conference rivalry the PAC 10 allowed to stay the same.
