  • When rivalry becomes law

If one SC lawmaker has his way, the annual Clemson/USC game will become a legal requirement. Since both schools are state-owned (Clemson is a land-grant university), they have the authority to do it (and they did do it once in the 50's).

With conference realignments happening, this seems like an interesting way to preserve rivalries. But, AD's are going to howl.

I would shed a tear if Clean Old-Fashioned Hate ended. The Palmetto Bowl? meh.

There is only one USC and it's not the school to which you refer. Please cease and desist and find a new name.

The US Patent and Trademark Office, the US Court of Appeals, and college football fans across the world agree with you

I also thought you were talking about the "real" SC. Not the Gamecocks..

Anywho, back on the topic. Of all the things a legislature can do with their time this is high on my list of things that smell of ego rather than logic. There may be times that such a game benefits a less prestigious state school but I'd rather ADs be allowed to do their job. Who's to say that the Ads on their own can't produce two games that are of greater benefit to the whole without the legislatures determining that for them.

I was about to post this. South Carolina came first. The debate is over.

I imagine that that's the argument we're going to hear if this thing gets any traction. Also, our governor is a maverick of sorts, so I have no idea if she would sign this into law or veto it. If I had to bet, I'd bet veto.

That depends entirely on who you ask. Anywhere in ACC or SEC country, the term "USC" refers to only one campus location - and it isn't located in the Pac-12.

The US judiciary disagrees with you but that is ok if you want to think that. I'm going with what the law says because I don't want to trample the Constitution.

                        I quite agree...

Oh, and while we're on the subject:

                        Utah - 1850
                        University of Miami - 1925
