  • Project: Workbench

After the success of the bathroom shelf project, my wife was convinced that I should buy a miter saw. I had borrowed a saw from a colleague to do the bathroom shelf, but I wanted my own. So I bought a simple little Ryobi 10-inch compound miter saw (I have at least 6 other Ryobi ONE+ 18-volt tools, but this plugs into the wall... bummer!), then used it to cut the wood for the workbench that it would thereafter be sitting on.

I found quite a few plans online for smaller workbenches, then modified the plan to meet the requirements of my garage. I wanted it to be wide -- 14.5 feet -- but it's not the biggest garage in the world and we both park in it so I couldn't have it be wider than 18 inches.

    Cutting the wood:

Note that I basically have one pair of shorts that I wear in all my projects. They're from before I started Weight Watchers/South Beach and they're incredibly baggy, but I don't mind destroying them. Just thought I'd explain my lack of work clothing variety.

The bench is nothing but 2x4s and a few 2x12s for the deck. Here I'm building the legs:

    Framed the sides:

At this point the sides were assembled and connected to each other at the bottom:

    Finished the bottom shelf:

Moved it into the place (damn heavy -- I should've called my neighbor for help) and measured out the top deck:

This shows in very clear detail my I needed a workbench. Cutting the top:

    The completed workbench:

    I'm really happy with it.

      workbench-ish task upcoming for me.
I need a router table, and am looking for plans, suggestions, etc.
I'm going to make one myself, so pretty much anything is under consideration.
Anyone have some can't-live-without, which-they-had features on their tables?
      I intend to live forever.
      So far, so good.

Nice work, but given that it's already filled up with junk, I'm calling it shelving, not a workbench.
