  • Project: Built-in bathroom shelf

Last month I did my first real woodworking project since junior high. I've always loved the idea of woodworking but never really had the tools, space, or desire to spend the time doing it. All that has changed in the last several months, and I decided to build a shelf for our bathroom.

We had a big mirror in our master bath. Since they don't put medicine cabinets in houses anymore all we had were four drawers and four cupboards underneath the counter. As a result we'd end up keeping far too many things on the counter-top. Sometimes you don't want to put something in a drawer -- but keeping them sitting around either of the sinks was looking cluttered. You can see the size of the mirror here:

I drew up some ideas and pulled some ideas from things my wife had pinned on Pinterest, then cut all the wood:

It was cold in the garage so I assembled everything at our breakfast table:

The next day I sanded the whole shelf. Note the folding table -- that was my workbench for the project.

I also cut out all the trim for the two remaining sides of the mirror. My wife then painted the shelf and the trim:

I had spent a good amount of time getting the shelf perfect -- I wanted it to sit flush against the mirror, rest on the countertop and the lip of the little backsplash portion, and have enough room to bolt into the studs at the top of the shelf. I set it all up and glued all the trim to the mirror.

I attached the crown moulding and we caulked all around the shelf. Here are some pics of the finished product:

Next I'll post a thread about the workbench I just finished building.

Wow Tim that is awesome! Dd you put up two new mirrors or simply put the trim around the existing mirror?
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

The latter. The shelf sits flush against the existing mirror and the trim goes around each of the two remaining sides.

Looks great. How did you fill the gap at the bottom between the bottom of the mirror and the countertop? Was it just caulked?

                    Nice job.

Very nice work Tim. I could never do something like that.
