  • We have a guy sitting in my bosses office right now with a Utefans.net shirt

That says Prepare To Be Boarded.

I just had two people come up to me that dont follow sports at all that said:

"what the hell does that shirt have to do with running utes?"

I explained the pirate ship and they both started laughing about how gay it was.

Well, I hang out at the pirate ship for tailgating before the games and can say that nobody involved thinks it is anything but fun. It was never about anything at all.

I think you just pinpointed the reason why so many coog fans don't get it.

For BYU fans that knock the pirate ship.....

What does BYU do for its tailgates that is better? Or even equivalent?

BYU discourages tailgating and banished the fans that want to create a tailgating atmosphere. They are relegated to some parking lot about 3 blocks from the stadium.

Yes, pirate ships and flag and fiesta hats...I get it. It might not be War Eagle swooping down across the stadium. Maybe it isn't Chief Olestra and his low-fat burning spear at midfield. It might not be Script Ohio or Tommy Trojan stabbing the sword into the SC logo. Or the Sooner Schooner or Ralphie the Buffalo. Or whatever your favorite tradition may be.

But at least it is something. It is a rallying cry. And the best traditions are born of these little spirit building symbols. Little apostate Utes that don't know any better are growing out their first goatees; buying their first ear piercings; getting their first barbed wire tattoos; they are putting their recently purchased bandwagon red caps in the dishwasher to fade them and make the caps look older than they really are; and they are being raised with the pirate ship. The next generation of Utes will simply adopt the pirate ship as part of the Ute identity. And they will pass it to their kids. That is how traditions are born.

One thing I commented to EPU at the Y/U game this past November.....I like how the U encourages fans to bring large flags to the game. That place was a sea of red with U flags and Jolly Rogers being waved throughout. I thought it looked cool. I got sick of EPU offering me whiskey, but I know he was just being sociable.

I keep forgetting that the reason that BYU tailgate and tradition is so lacking is because, as mormons, we have baptisms to attend on Saturday, as well as Church callings to fulfill. That is why BYU doesn't do pep rallys, tailgates, or other fun football traditions. Fortunately for almost every other big school in the country, none of their fans have anything better to do with their lives on a football Saturday.

I apologize about the whiskey and am glad that you told me that your preference is vodka. Next time, I'll be better prepared.

The only difference between the two is that one guy gets paid to come up with lame slogans and the other guy pays to come up with lame slogans. In both situations, someone is getting ripped off.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

You know, it is silly, but at the same time, I love when visitors see it and have that "WTF?" reaction. How did popcorn even get started at football games? I have no idea. But at least it is uniquely BYU. Most of our cheers are ripped off from other schools......dangling your car keys, the Imperial March, the Shark/Jaws thing, etc. So at least popcorn is ours.

I could do without those bizarre Cosmo videos, though. I just don't get those things.

The U is not totally immune from the copycat syndrome. I have noticed 2 iterations of their "U" hand symbol.....one is the Texas "Hook 'em Horns" and the other, more popular, is the two-handed U that Miami has been doing since forever. This is why I don't slag the pirate ship. The pirate ship is uniquely Utah. Good for them.

I wonder why BYU doesn't have a happy medium for tailgaters and football fans. They can encourage families to bring their trailors and RVs, then have hundreds of missionaries there to bombard everyone with literature. Areas where you can can your own preserves. Let all the MLMs in the area set up tents and do promos. "Dry, conservative T Shirt" contests. Stuff like that.

                          I agree with this.

I think being unique is good. It was embarrassing some years back when the Cougars were wearing the same uniforms as Cincinnati in the NCAA tourney.

I can do without the cannon and the push-ups. Doing those things is just following the crowd.

Do other schools do the can-can line like the courgarettes after scores? I haven't seen that before. Maybe that's something we can embrace.

Even if he is correct, it doesn't sound like the motivation was to "stick to our beliefs," but rather simply to "stick it" to the Utes. I can respect that.
