  • Blocking porn from the family network

Our kids are now regularly using my IBM thinkpad tablet PC running ubuntu. My wife asked what can be done to help protect them from running into porn. I told her that I suspected that somebody had set up proxy servers to filter automatically. I thought about setting up my own server to do this, if there were a database of nefarious websites available.

I stumbled briefly upon openDNS and their product. http://www.opendns.com/home-solution...ontrols#family

Since we have a number of IT admins out here, what do you or your business do?

I am not an IT guy, but I use OpenDNS at our home. It seems to work well. I don't know how well it would work if someone was insistent on getting around it, but my kids are not real IT savvy, and, unless they hide it really well, are not searching for porn at home. It is customizable, though not as much as I would like, and there are several reporting options. Plus, it is not a piece of bloated software that you need to install on everything, and it works on anything that accesses the network, whether it is a laptop, phone, ipad, or whatever.

I think your kids are pretty young, so I think it would work well for you.

We use OpenDNS as well. It's worked great for us so far.

Oldest is ~8. My mind is churning the ideas. I can make user accounts for the kids that don't allow access to changning the DNS computer side. For ipads, i can use the mobile configuration utility to force the DNS.

In terms of router access, i could lock the router inside a termination block closet or something like that.

On a similar note, is there a service for kids to have a legitimate email address that's protected from crap being sent to it? I won't let my oldest (9) get one because you have to lie about your age.

You should check out google apps. Their spam filter is pretty good and there is an option for the admin to log into the account (aka you can monitor it without his knowledge). You can also default all email to get forwarded to you as well.

Wow. This will kill NetNanny, unless it already has.
