I went in for a fasting blood test yesterday in anticipation of my annual physical. Happily, all of my tests (there were around 20 of them) were in the normal range, except my red blood cell count was slightly below the normal range, but that's probably because I donated blood two weeks ago, a stupid thing to do since I was doing two long bike rides in the ensuing 10 days.
But the interesting news was seeing the effect a strong exercise program apparently has on cholesterol. I've never had a cholesterol problem--last year, without much exercise, my total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglyceride numbers were 218, 135, 53 and 150--I think these are okay, but by no means great, readings. I just received my numbers from yesterday's test, coming after a pretty strong exercise program the past few months, with slightly better eating habits and a roughly 5% drop in weight, and those numbers are now 178, 100, 58 and 101.
Sorry for yet another self-centered post, but I'm simply surprised (I know I shouldn't be) that the only significant variable in my lifestyle the past year has been better exercise, and it obviously makes a big difference. So keep at it, people.
