  • Steak and ice cream tonight, on me!

I went in for a fasting blood test yesterday in anticipation of my annual physical. Happily, all of my tests (there were around 20 of them) were in the normal range, except my red blood cell count was slightly below the normal range, but that's probably because I donated blood two weeks ago, a stupid thing to do since I was doing two long bike rides in the ensuing 10 days.

But the interesting news was seeing the effect a strong exercise program apparently has on cholesterol. I've never had a cholesterol problem--last year, without much exercise, my total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglyceride numbers were 218, 135, 53 and 150--I think these are okay, but by no means great, readings. I just received my numbers from yesterday's test, coming after a pretty strong exercise program the past few months, with slightly better eating habits and a roughly 5% drop in weight, and those numbers are now 178, 100, 58 and 101.

Sorry for yet another self-centered post, but I'm simply surprised (I know I shouldn't be) that the only significant variable in my lifestyle the past year has been better exercise, and it obviously makes a big difference. So keep at it, people.

    Great job -- that's impressive.

What is wrong with a self-centered post?

Congrats on the clean bill of health.

I fear this concern may be derived from reactionary post I made recently (a few weeks back, perhaps) in response to a thread started by a fellow poster. I think my intent may have been misinterpreted by some (likely due to the fact that I never really fleshed it out). To clarify, I don't pretend to think that we shouldn't post about ourselves. Not in the slightest. In fact, people posting about themselves, followed up by others' comments, stories, and anecdotes is what makes this forum so great. So my 'lashing out' was not directed at those who post about themselves, as much as is was directed at those who only show up to post a new thread about themselves (and, most often, their problems) with little (if any) participation in other threads. PAC certainly doesn't fit that description, nor do most on CWUF.

I, for one, am always interested in hearing about PAC's life. His colonoscopy tales are particularly entertaining.

Good job PAC. I've been preaching more beef for some time now. You've caught the vision, and I expect others to follow your lead.

Quit talking about all your old posts!

This is my plan. Last year my cholesterol was in the mid 220s. Way too high for my tastes.

I am doing 2 cholesterol tests this year. One next month and one in Dec. I want to see how much the diet and exercise over the past couple of months have helped. Then, do a second test in Dec to see how a full 6 months of diet and exercise affect my overall cholesterol levels.

I am really hoping that my cholesterol has dropped somewhat or else I will be really discouraged.

Have no concerns. All evidence to the contrary, I'm actually a little embarrassed about self-adulatory posts. But I confess I really enjoy the support and good wishes of others here, so I throw modesty aside and go fishing yet again.

That's what's particularly gratifying about the news, as my love of beef is well-documented. Last night the missus grilled a teriyaki-marinated chateubriand, but recoiled in horror as I consumed vast quantities. In truth, despite jonesing constantly for le bouef, I only eat cow a couple of times a week. But when I do, whole herds diminish.

It occurs to me that one other thing I've done the past year may have helped: I take 2400 mg (two capsules) of fish oil (Omega 3) every day. But other than that, the only clear change the past few months has been exercise. Knowing you to be the svelte, dashing young blade that you are (your sig pic doesn't do you justice, but then it fails to show the benefit of your recent hair plug procedure), I have every confidence in your ability to administer a severe beatdown on Mr. LDL. Good luck.

You really don't have to exersize vigorously to get those kind of results. I just walk every day. My cholestal numbers droped from the 210 range to 140 with a corresponding drop in the LDL and Triglyserides (I dont have the numbers handy right now) and in and increase in the HDL. My blood pressure also went from 150/90 to 105/65.

Good work and keep it up
