  • NFL rule I don't get

While watching the Red Zone channel this morning, they showed a play from the Colts/Browns game where the situation was that the Colts had 4th and goal from the 1 inch line. Peyton tried to QB sneak but the ball was stripped and another Colt recovered and proceeded to score. The referee however waived the score off saying that only the player who fumbled was allowed to advance the ball, so it was 1st down Browns.

Does anyone know this rule? Is that just on 4th down? What is the purpose of it? I have been thinking about this all day and I can not see a reason why this rule exists.

It's not just on 4th down. And I don't understand it either. I am still trying to wrap my head around the tuck rule and the Raiders getting jobbed out of a super bowl.

So if it isn't just on 4th down, then you are saying any fumble can not be advanced by the offense? That makes even less sense. I had thought that perhaps it is on 4th down to try and stop a team from just fumbling the ball in hopes of a teammate picking it up and getting the 1st/touchdown. But if it is on any down that that is really stupid.

Before the rule, players would intentionally fumble the ball forward when they were stopped short. This rule stops that.

It is just on 4th down I believe. So that players dont fumble the ball forwards on purpose to gain yardage on 4th down after they are stopped. It is similar to the rule inside of 2 minutes about fumbling the ball out of bounds.

I thought that it was only on 4th down as well. Not 100% sure but I thought that itwas 4th down only.

I think the rule about only the player who fumbled being able to advance it came after the 1978 game between the Raiders and the Chargers:
