  • IN politics they measure the "intensity"

level for the people who support a given candidate.

Do you think the intensity level for BYU football is down or is as strong as ever. Really, will anyone be in pain for more than 5 minutes if we lose to Tulsa.

Do you think the coaches and admin. realize this or even care? Is there actually anything they could do about it or are they stuck?

On the other hand, I could be just projecting the feelings of myself, family and friends. We could be unique in this feeling.

I am, luckily, a long way from any BYU fans with whom I interact, so I can't speak to their intensity. I will, however, point out that BYU is on a precipice. Best, but unrealistic, case: They beg steal and borrow their way into the Big XII. Next best case: They are TCU and it is 1996, and they are about to be left out for 15 years. Worse case: They are Rice and it is 1996, and they are about to be left out permanently.

This is not to rub it in anyone's face--both my parents are BYU alumni, and I grew up going to BYU games. It is, instead, meant to spur you folks to actually do something or the intensity will disappear, perhaps forever.

Edit: And by "you folks" I mean BYU fans. Take control of your team's destiny. Forget about being labeled as someone who is steadying the ark, and start making demands.

My intensity is down in a big way. I used to be an 8 or a 9 on a scale of 1-10. That intensity is how I discovered and posted on CB when it was BYUboard and run by boardman instead of El Jefe, back when there was this one wierd dude named Kaly posting on cougarfan. I am now about a 5 on this scale. If I wasn't already hooked on CUF, there is no way I would seek out internet discussion boards to discuss BYU football anymore. The only reason I know about the Heaps transfer is that I enjoy this community for reasons greater thasn BYU football and I read about it here.

My intensity level is definitely waning. Didn't even bother to watch the HI game. The season and all the speculation and all the crap with Heaps just has me spent.

Down, for sure. So are most Cougar fans'. I'm really starting to see that playing in a conference with old rivals really made more of a difference to my interest in the games than I thought.

BYU needs a magic football season sometime in the next couple of seasons to sustain fan interest.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

Mine is about a 3. I've watched 2 live games in their entirety this season, the others on DVR, a few were several days later.

I was much more excited to watch the basketball game last Saturday and enjoyed it more than watching the football game. I will always watch and go to games when they are convenient, but the apparent attitude of those in charge of the football program and the athletic deparment has my enthusiasm for BYU Football probably at its lowest level ever.

                I'm a 7.

Despite a busy schedule, I made time to watch every game live this year.

                I was a 6 in: 1999, 2004, 2010
                I was a 7 in: 2000, 2003
                I was an 8 in: 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
                I was a 9 in: 1996, 2001, 2009
                Incomplete: 1997, 1998 (on mission)

To be a 10, I think you have to travel long distances to two or more game.

The past year or so has been a rollercoaster for my BYU fan intensity level. Historically, it has been about a 4 but mostly because BYU played few opponents of interest to me. I was a Nebraska fan before attending BYU and have kept that primary allegiance.

Then I was alerted by some contacts in Nebraska that Colorado was serious about leaving the Big 12 for the PAC-10 and that BYU had an excellent chance of replacing Colorado in the Big 12. Around the same time, my oldest kid decided to attend Texas A&M over BYU. So my BYU fan interest spiked because I thought it would be interesting to have Nebraska, Texas A&M, and BYU all in the same conference.

Then Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten, Texas A&M left for the SEC, and BYU is still independent. If BYU stays independent my fan intensity will probably wane to a 3. If BYU ever makes it into the Big 12, my fan intensity will increase because of my familiarity with the conference and it will give me someone to cheer for in the Big 12.

Getting beat over the head with the failures to make the Big 12 and Big East work and staring complete irrelevance in the face for the long term, and little prospects for the future of the team doing anything remotely special. I am much more of a BYU basketball fan now. I will probably follow what Urban is up to at OSU more than I will follow BYU football spring/fall until BYU gets Hill ready to play hopefully in 2013.

This has been the most un-enjoyable season for me as a BYU fan. Just too much of a roller coaster on so many levels. I'm angry at how the expansion was handled (or maybe I'm angry at how it was handled in communications with the fans), I'm angry at Bronco and his attitude with the fans and the press, I'm angry at how mismanaged this team is on offense, and I'm angry at having to live with mediocrity. That being said, I'm still invested as a fan. I have no idea why. I guess I will always have hope for the next year, the next coach, etc.

I have gone from hope to fear. Fear that I will become a TV fan and we actually pull off the hope or dream and all the time and energy I put into the program was given up just before the prize. I didn't buy into the Bronco belief that he could create a team of RM's that compete at the elite level. I didn't buy into the belief all the best LDS athletes will recruit BYU. I feel I have been right, but perhaps eventually be wrong.

Lowered expectations has made life easier though. I really am not upset about Heaps, our lousy future home schedule or a possible loss in the upcoming bowl game. I do miss the exitement of the potential thought.

The intensity of my hate for BYU football has gone way down. It's hard to hate when I just keep feeling more and more sorry for all of you.

I found that my intensity really suffered a permanent down grade during the Crowton years. The John Beck win over a lousy UNM team was all that kept me from not watching another game in 2004?.

Prior to Crowton I was likely more upset about losses than the actual players. Now I can take a loss in stride, doesn't upset me for more than a short time.

I still watch every game on a live broadcast, but I certainly say that too many more meaningless filler games could lead to another down grade in interest.

                              I am still an 8/10.

My interest in non-BYU football is 1 or 2 out of 10. If BYU dies so will college football for me. I have no meaningful ties or interest in anyone but my alma mater and don't see myself becoming a fan of Texas Tech or Florida, or any other school I've attended,
