  • If you thought Bronco was thin skinned

Check out this report on Urban Meyer. He gives former players the GWB speech:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4163417

"If you want to be critical of a player on our team or a coach on our team you can buy a ticket for seat 37F, you're not welcome back in the football office," Meyer said, according to the report. "You're either a Gator or you're not a Gator."

I was just about to post that. Seriously, can his EGO get any BGR?

Is it as BG as Magic, the value of Jason Kidd's experience, or something the heck about Chinese gymnasts?

Age disparity between Greg Oden and Chinese gymnasts, IIRC.

My favorite quote from the article:

"Urban Meyer's not a Gator. He's a caretaker of the Gator program," Sileo said. "Most times these coaches think they're the programs, but really, the program is the players. That's the problem I have with coaches whose egos get too big for their britches. If Urban doesn't like it, that's too bad."

            That's a great quote Sizzle.

Urban is all about Urban. Always has been. Always will be. And that's how it should be.

Where's Goatnapper to tell us it doesn't matter if a coach acts obnoxious or has a big ego as long as he wins?

I'm not sure there is a college coach out there that doesn't have a huge ego. It's rare that you mention a big time college football program without the first thought being the coach...maybe a big name QB, but mostly the coach.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Right here. U folks adored him when he was there and this quote is no less illuminating about his intentions than what was obvious 5-6 years ago. The dude is a stud and every fanbase will overwhelmingly accept his ego for the victories. Look at Majerus and the defense much of Utenation threw up for him until y'all decided you could win as much as he was in the early 2000's without the hassle.

Winning in athletics at most levels brings a great deal of forgiveness.

I agree with the concept that you almost have to have an ego like that to be successful at that level of competition. I think there are more with the natural ability, but the lack of ego/drive sets them back. Urban is consumed with success and everything else in his life is likely to take a backseat to that drive.

Honestly LA, it kind of cute how we sometimes act as if character is genuinely important to us as fans. Certainly, we would all prefer all our coaches to have the charm and principles of a Lavell Edwards, but you, I and everyone else can be bought by the thrill of watching our favorite teams be successful. We get intoxicated by it and will find any angle of support for our man when he is exposed as a disgusting egomaniac. There are limits on behavior every program will put on a coach but just being a genuine asshole is not crossing the threshold for any program.

We want a winner. If he's a good guy on top of that, it's a bonus. I was able to forgive Majerus an awful lot because he was such a winner. We did get to a point where his shelf life expired, but it took a lot longer than it would have had he been a loser.

I think it wasn't that his shelf life expired as much as the success he had from post Andre Miller until 2004 was not worth the baggage. It wasn't so much that his crap hit a threshold that offended UteNation's delicate sensitivities as much as the cost-benefit analysis was no longer in his favor. I don't think his behavior was any different or that Utenation was suddenly unwilling to put up with it, it was that the reason why it was excused was going away.
