  • Why does Bronco use the term nickel?

On passing downs, prior to this game, our substitution pattern on passing downs is as follows:

sub in a LB for a DE. That's it. No other change. The LB lines up in the exact same spot the DE would line up in. So, really, there is no change in the defense except for a personnel change, putting in a guy that's more of a threat to get to the QB.

So why does Bronco call this a nickel package?

Unless I'm missing some other substitutions it's not what is commonly referred to as nickel.

Actually in this game if you watch the "Nickel package" was bringing in Joe Sampson for Jameson Frazier.

For once Bronco ran a true Nickel defense.

Oh cool. I didn't notice as I was groggy most of the game.

Yeah that's why I said before this game.

I remember seeing a 2-4-5 on at least a few plays. Given how much they were running that seemed a bit odd, but it turned out to be really effective.

This was the new look, special design to account for the loss of Pendleton on pass plays.

I am really glad Bronco found a way to use Sampson in this game, I was wary of the move from CB to SS as I thought Sampson(who was playing a bunch at CB) would get buried as a safety as Bronco does not rotate safeties much. But it will be interesting to see how he looks the next 2 games against pass heavy teams.
