We discussed this in the Big 12 Expansion thread, but I keep trying to find the article and can't, so I'm parking this here.
I still think this a very reasonable method to quantify market size to gauge general program strength and expansion attractiveness.
My comment is that it seems BB might be mixed with FB in this because basketball powers Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, and UNC all seem a little overrated in terms of football.
The other thing that you can't ignore is how competitive the program is. If a team is on national TV, a team's fans will only be a portion of total viewers. For example right now a game between Boise State and Stanford would be highly watched, though neither are in the top 50 in market size.
