  • Gas Oven Won't Light!

Anyone with experience with ovens here?

We have a GE Profile gas oven/stove.

Several days ago, we put our oven through the self-cleaning cycle, which may or may not have caused anything. Later that day, I turned on the oven, and it did not light. Here are some relevant details:

The broiler and the stove still work just fine, so gas is getting to the unit.

I thought at first that the igniter must have burned out or something, but a couple of things make me think otherwise:

    1. When I start the oven, I don't smell any gas
    2. I have tried to start the oven and manually light the gas by using a stick lighter stuck underneath the oven floor where the burner is. Nothing ignites.

Anything that could be causing gas to not get to just one part of the appliance?

Mosttimes the gas company will come to your house to check out your gas stove for free. They do it free because the cost of labor to inspect is way cheaper than the cost of litigation should something be wrong with your gas lines, and you blow your family to smithereens.

Chances are that it is one of two things: your igniter or your gas valve. The igniter is a quick, easy, inexpensive fix. If your oven does not light, 90% of the time it is the ignitor. The gas valve is a difficult repair for your average DIY and you would be time/money ahead to hire a professional.
