  • Where would BYU be positioned in pecking order, today in Big XII?

Just curious...where do you think BYU would be positioned in the pecking order in the Big XII in a) football; and b) mens basketball?

It is a curious thing to think about how successful BYU would be in the Big XII? Can we consistently get the blue chip athletes to be a contender most years? I wonder if we would become Kansas in football, and Iowa St in basketball?

If we do indeed "get in" to the Big XII...does BYU continue to compete on a national stage, or do we drift off into obscurity continually receiving beat downs by Texas, OU in football, and Kansas, KSU, OU, Texas in basketball?

If so...would it be better to stay independent and 'smart schedule' BYU's teams to keep them in the eye of the nation as contenders, or fight the good fight in the BCS and see where it takes us?

In a ten team Big 12, I think we'd be 3rd or 4th most year in both sports. I'm okay with that.

Football: In the mix for 3rd/4th

      Basketball: About the same.

Question: Which current B12 team do you see yourselves most on-par with?

Here's how I'd rank the Big 12 for football in 2011 if BYU were playing in the conference:

            Oklahoma
            Texas A&M
            BYU
            Texas
            Okie St.
            Missouri
            Texas Tech
            Kansas St.
            Iowa St.
            Baylor
            Kansas

OU and Texas will always be top teams. With Texas A&M gone, BYU will be fighting Missouri, Okie St., and Tech. KSU might be on it's way back now that Bill Snyder has been resurrected. I guess BYU will have a good indication after their visit to Austin.

Haven't followed hoops that closely in the Big 12 since I mostly follow BYU. But think it will be similar. Kansas is always good but there seems to always be another few teams who earn national rankings. BYU would be similarly ranked in basketball.

This is not meant as snarky, but whatever that league ends up consisting of it should not be called the Big 12. A league without ATM and Nebraska is not he same brand. Chose a new name, IMO.

                I agree, but they won't.

A&M is not a traditional or longstanding member of the conference. That's like saying that a Pac-10 without Arizona should be renamed.

Football (same line implies roughly tied):
                          Texas, Oklahoma
                          Ok St, Missouri, BYU
K St, TT (I think they overachieved with a good coach)
                          Kansas
                          Iowa St, Baylor

                          Basketball:
                          Kansas
                          OK St, Texas
                          Missouri, OK, K State
                          BYU, Iowa St, TT, Baylor

                          pretty damn good BB conference

BYU would be on par with Oklahoma State, Missouri, and Texas Tech in 2011.

This year? Maybe even second behind only Oklahoma. I think this year BYU is a very good team and the rest of the contry will figure that out starting tomorrow...

                              year-in-year-out, I'd put:

                              - OK and TX tied for 1.5th

                              - BYU, OK St, Missou & Texas Tech - tied for 4.5th

                              - Kansas, KState, Baylor & Iowa St - tied for 8.5th

Year-in-year-out we'd be solidly in the upper-middle class of the Big 12. Sometimes 3rd. Sometimes 6th. In really good years, with a favorable schedule (OK or TX at home) we could challenge for 1 or 2. In the worst years, we'd only be 7th or 8th. But even in the worst years, with Utah and 2 patsies as our OOC games, we'd still have a shot at going to a bowl.
