  • What is the worst loss you've suffered as a fan?

The most painful loss I have ever suffered was BYU vs. UTEP in 1985. It brought me to tears and made me sick to my stomach. There was no way UTEP was better than BYU. It was sickening. Bosco had all day to throw, they were dropping 9 and rushing 2, yet BYU couldn't figure out how to score.

After Bosco's last interception I turned the TV off, went in my room, turned on KJQ 92.7 FM and cried as a-ha's Take On Me played. To this day every time I hear that song I think of Robbie Bosco looking around dumbfounded for 10 seconds looking for a receiver before throwing it to a UTEP defender.

The irony is that today I'm a Utah fan and actually enjoy recalling that game. But at the time, it literally made me cry. I was very into BYU.

Let me guess...that transformation took place around 2003?

No, it actually took place the instant a BYU cheerleader reluctantly gave in to Utah runningback Eddie Johnson's request for a high-five after scoring a TD in 1988.

Without a doubt....the game at Nevada...absolutely the worst game I've ever been to.

UTEP 1985. No question. I had nightmares all night. I kept dreaming that it was not true and then would wake up and realize that it was true. Horrible.

1991 game 7 of the World Series. Lonnie effing Smith. Game 6 in both 1997 and 1998 of the NBA finals. I have always hated Michael Jordon and I always will. Not too fond of Pippin or Rodman either.

3-0, loss to Utah at LES. So many reasons.

                1) It was Utah
                2) scoring streak ended
                3) colder than crap
                4) both teams sucked on offense
                5) that year I bought the $1,00 tickets on the east side and their were Ute fans all around me courtesy of corporations that bought tickets
                6) It was Utah

Luckily, as a BYU fan, I haven't had to endure many losses. I absolutely hate all losses, but the worst for me was the loss to Utah when Ratliff killed us. That was a year I was looking forward to a blowout in our favor and I had plans to do some serious nose-rubbing. BYU was underprepared and out-coached. It was a sad day.

Hawai'i '01 was a particularly brutal one for me.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Please expound, what happened that day, how did you feel? We're healing here, it does no good just to name the game, we already know BYU lost to Hawaii in 01. What were the details?

Harline is still open...those words remain painful for any and all Utah fans.

In McBride's final season, Utah was beating Indiana (that was when you could show up 15 minutes late for the game and still get a great seat). Having already run for 200 yards, Marty Johnson was still in the game and he blew out his knee. That one "loss" of a player at the time was just devistating to me as a fan. It may have also been the catalyst that began to Usher out McBride and usher in Meyer...but at the time, man that was a heartbreaking loss in spite of a win.

I almost died watching that game! I made some homemade bread and had just taken a bite when Hawaii ran the kick-off back for a td. I sucked it into my throat and nearly choked to death. Luckily, I was watching the game with my friend and he gave me the Heimlich!

That was the one where Curtis Brown was wide open down the sideline and dropped a sure TD right?

Yes. He slipped out of the backfield and nobody followed him. Perfect pass. I still think if he catches that, BYU wins, but who knows?
