  • Leaking disposal

My disposal is leaking out of the bottom. Yes, I checked all of the water lines and drain lines, it is definitely the bottom. Probably rusted out or cracked, especially since I have to fetch rocks out of it, courtesy the kids, at least once a month.

I believe it is probably the one that the builders installed 10 years ago. We've been here going on 5 years, so it isn't unreasonable that it is falling apart by now.

So, it looks like I get to replace it.

Any suggestions on where to find a good one? Absent any better ideas, I was just going to stop at Lowe's and and find a nice powerful one.

Ours is cracked too... I have super glued the crack in the meantime.

Mine is leaking out where the power plug goes into the base. So, I'm guessing the housing is cracked inside. I thought about sealing it with silicone, but then I worried about the water building up around the plug.

        Silcone! Brilliant!

As for the leak near the power plug, yeah. That sucks. Looks like you'll be installing a new one this week.

Are you implying I am using my garbage disposal for an activity for which it was not designed to handle?

You probably have the standard $74 Contractor Special Disposable Disposal that gets installed in homes these days. I say replace it. Definitely cheaper than dealing with water damage!

I don't recall the exact model I used, but I installed a very QUIET, powerful, effective disposal in my last home. It had a built-in soft mount that cut almost all the sound to barely above a whisper. It was probably an InSinkErator Evolution or something like that. Cost ~$200 and took 60 minutes to install, including routing the pipes to the dishwasher (didn't have a disposal before so I had to completely change the drain lines). I had exceptionally little plumbing experience before this, so realize that it is pretty easy to accomplish.

The existing one was a 1/2 HP Badger 5. I upgraded to the 3/4 HP Badger 10. I saw those uber-quiet ones at Lowe's, but they didn't have any floor models I could compare to see how much quieter they really were.

I'm happy with how it turned out though.
