  • Utah Man: winning games and having sex

Apparently the secret is to wear red.

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...redsports.html

In each event Olympic staff randomly assigned red or blue clothing or body protection to competitors. When otherwise equally matched with their opponent in fitness and skill, athletes wearing red were more likely to win the bout.

Hill and Barton got the idea for their study study out of a mutual interest in the evolution of sexual signals in primates—"red seems to be the color, across species, that signals male dominance and testosterone levels," Barton said.

For example, studies by Setchell, the Cambridge primate researcher, show that dominant male mandrills have increased red coloration in their faces and rumps. Another study by other scientists shows that red plastic rings experimentally placed on the legs of male zebra finches increase the birds' dominance.
    ...

The pair say their results indicate that sexual selection may have influenced the evolution of humans' response to color.

Have I mentioned how great I look in red?

Ahh. This study goes a long way to not only explain the otherwise inexplicable Ute aggression displayed during BYU's haka, but also those times the Utes came away victorious against all odds like in 2005.

Excellent find 3D. So, mandrills with redder faces and butts do better with lady mandrills. This is good news for Ute Fans.

This explains the LaVell Edwards era

"Where there was a large point difference—presumably because one contestant was far superior to the other—color had no effect on the outcome," Barton said. "Where there was a small point difference, the effect of color was sufficient to tip the balance."

As luck would have it, I am wearing a red shirt today.

I will let you all know if I receive more than the usual number of female mating displays directed toward me today.

                  Utes scheduled another blackout game

I didn't see this posted anywhere else here (doesn't mean it wasn't, only that I didn't see it), so might as well post the link here.

Count me as one of the Ute fans who think blackouts are lame.

I don't mind them, but they are only fun if we win.

This quote from the comment section had me laughing.

I missed this thread when it was started, and I'm not very impressed with the summary provided. Maybe I'll get around to reading the actual study, given that even natgeo and other scientific outlets tend to do a miserable job of accurate explanation. Anyway, male geladas do indeed get a redder chest with increasing status, but female chimps get a redder vulva with increasing fertility so I don't think it's as cut and dried as all that.

                            Then there's this:

                            bachelor mandrill

                            dominant mandrill

Strange that red is the color they focused on.
