  • I'm officially a homeowner!

I got the keys yesterday and immediately changed the locks and started pulling up the carpet. Once the carpet and pad are up, I'll fix a couple of loose boards in the subfloor and get the placed prepped for painting. Home Depot is going to become my best friend.
    Not that, sickos.

Congrats - and welcome to the club

Very nice! Better than living in your parents' basement.

Congrats! You are doing exactly what I did. I have spent thousands at Home Depot since I bought my place. Buying a home is definitely a great reason to buy some killer tools!

          ...and worse enemy.

Althought I love my house (bought it a little over a year ago), I miss the days when I could call the landlord to fix everything.

congrats saint. Any plans for a game room with an HD projector?

            I prefer Lowes.

Good point. I should change that.

Of course, but that's down the road. The previous owners were kind of hard on the place, so I need to replace the carpet and paint at the very least. I have good plans for this place, but I'll detail those when I post some pictures. I don't really care about Home Depot vs. Lowes; Home Depot's just closer.

FWIW - When I got the materials for my deck, I'm just finishing up replacing the old one, Lowes was considerably less expensive - $3800 v $3000

FWIW, Lowe's tends to place a 10%-off coupon in the move-in packets at the USPS.

Well, the paint is finished (well, I need to do a few touch ups), and the carpet is in. The next week will be packing and moving. Hooray!

How are the squeaky floors? Were you able to get them screwed down to your satisfaction? I assume you used grabber screws; if not, what did you use?

About 10 years ago, my dad went around his house trying to get the squeaks out. He hammered in a bunch of nails through the carpet wherever he got a response. Underneath the carpet was nice oak hardwood. I was so appalled that he messed up the hardwood, but his response was interesting. Back when he built the house, everything was hardwood, so he didn't think much of it. He was happy to be able to put carpet over it, once he could afford it. Crazy how what we value changes over time.

They're good. The worst spot was right by the basement stairs because the builder just used a regular piece of wood rather than one that fit into the tongue-and-groove system the rest of the subfloor had. The end of the board was just hanging out because it ended between the joists, thus the nasty squeak. My dad and I cut a couple of 2x4s and a 2x10 to fit between the joists and fastened them in place with some 2" screws and liquid nails beneath where the two boards meet. Then we used ring shank nails to fasten the board to the new support boards, and everything's good as new. Well, better than new. I don't know how the previous owners didn't go crazy because that board creaked every other time you walk from the living room into the family room.

that's too bad. refinishing hardwood floors is still cheaper than laying new carpet.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Well, after a lot of hard work, I'm finally spending my first night in the new house. There's still some touch ups that need to be done, but it's livable now. Woohoo!
