Kickoff: 4:30PM PST

I know we already have a general game thread. I made this a separate thread so that it could be a quick and easy reference for my Ute brethren that are headed down to the game but don't want to have to wade through the other thread to find the info. This thread is not intended to supersede the other with regards to game chat, smack talk, and general awe and reverence for the USC Trojans. That being said, general awe and reverence for the USC Trojans is acceptable within this thread, as well. :fighton1: Given the length of the post, I will break it up and post it in 5 parts.

I have attached a campus map that has a few annotations I made. It is not pro by any means, but it will help you find your way. You will note that the campus map has designated parking structures all around. I will go into parking a little later in the post.

Overall, I would encourage you to go to campus early. Not an hour early, but several hours early. There is lots to see and do and many traditions you may want to observe as part of the experience. SC fans are cool with visitors, so don’t worry about exploring around. As long as you don’t pop off, you will be treated just fine. A sure fire conversation starter is to talk about your two bowl wins. That will probably turn a lot of heads right there and the beer and tequila will start to flow naturally.

Kickoff is at 4:30PM, so if you want to really soak it in, see some stuff and then make it over to the Coliseum, I would say to get there around 1:30 or so. I normally get there around 7AM and stay the entire day, but hey that’s just me!

    Parking

The map will show you the way. Parking on game day usually runs around $20. Don’t park at the Coliseum if you don’t have to and do NOT go South of the Coliseum. First, it is a horrible neighborhood. Second, you will be charged between $50-$100 depending on the game. There is no need to park there. Parking to the North of the Coliseum, in and around campus is fine and much cheaper. You will be safe, don’t worry. The earlier you get there, the greater the chance you will be able to park on campus. However, there are several structures off Fig that charge $20, also. I have also been known to park East of the 110 on Broadway. Totally free there. A few blocks walking distance, but no big deal and you save some dough. After the game, everyone is walking with you.

    Campus

Campus is the place to tailgate. The Coliseum tailgate is for wealthy Fifth-wheelers, visitors that don’t do their homework, and people that want to see where Lawrence Phillips ran over some Chinese and Mexican kids in a Honda Accord. Skip all that and head for campus once you park. Refer to the campus map for the following:

    1. Alumni Park: this is the main quad area of campus. This is also the heart of the tailgate scene and homecoming festivities. Tommy Trojan is found here right in front of Bovard Adminsitration Building. Once you get to campus, make your way here. You will find people setting up tents all over campus, though. The alumni tend to congregate in Alumni Park (go figure), while the undergrads congregate nearby in McCarthy Quad, although that is definitely not a hard and fast rule. We always set up shop right in Alumni Park and never very far from the Tommy statue. It is a great scene and lots of fun.

If you find yourself tailgating and absolutely must have sex right then and there, the rooftop beyond the Tommy statue offers a nice view and has been known to accommodate an amorous liaison or two.

Also of note, the building in the background of this shot houses the SC Student Union (as well as the pharmacy). If you don't have tickets and the game is not sold out (it wont be), you can go to the Student Union and buy available tickets there. Usually not great seats, but it is an easy solution if you don't want to hassle with the scalpers.

Take a pic in front of Tommy. It is tradition and the closer it gets to kickoff, the more crowded it gets. Tommy is a meeting place, it is the main area where scalpers set up shop, and it is also where the Victory Bell is toted out before kickoff for ringing and a Southern California shoutout (more on this later).

    2. Bookstore: you know what a bookstore is. Stop by, check out the gear upstairs, etc. Always fun to visit opposing schools bookstore. Buy your kids a foam sword or some fingers. Or better yet…a BEAT UTAH button!

    PART 2

    3. Heritage Hall: no trip to SC would be complete without stopping by Heritage.

Here you will see all the Heismans and some other trophies, jerseys, etc. The unique thing about Heritage is that it is totally accessible to students and fans (and agents!). These are the actual offices for coaches, the actual rooms for team meetings, etc. and you can check out almost all of it.

Take some time to go upstairs and view the main lobby from the balcony. Check out the banister upstairs and look at all the SC All American and Olympian medallions.

You can also see the construction on the new Athletics Center which will be opening next year

The main football offices are also upstairs. once you are done, head back down to the main floor.

From the main entrance on the ground floor, head down the hallway on your right. Towards the end of this hallway you will see a room on your left called "Auditorium." This is the team meeting room. You may recognize this room from the YouTube videos of Pete leading the team singing “Lean on Me.”

The room has murals of the campus and city of LA on the walls. Once inside this room, you will see a doorway on the far left side. Take this door, go down the narrow stairs to the level below.

You can now browse around and view pics and history of all of SC’s past. Walk everywhere and check it out. It is some impressive history on the walls. Start with the Sports Illustrated Wall

Then head down the hall towards Charles White to see Heisman Winners, All Americans, etc

      PART 3

You will also notice that all pics of Reggie have been excised, esp where his Heisman pic used to be:

The “Own The Rose Bowl” pic.

Utah already has a presence inside Heritage!

Once you get to the very end of the hallway and you reach all the present day pics of Leinart, et al, you can exit out that side door. It will take you up a ramp to the track and Cromwell Field.

My name is AC. You KNOW who I am, *#&!@ dammit! (note the blood all over him)

      4. Howard Jones Field: this is the main practice field. Anyone used to be able to attend, now the NCAA has force SC to clamp down, which is a shame, imo. You can see the field through the gates, though, and will likely recognize it from Sportscenter clips or the news or whatnot. The field entrance is through Goux Gate

      5. More on this in a bit….

        PART 4

        Traditions

Band Warm-up concert: 2 hours before kickoff. In this case, 2:30PM. Right in front of Heritage Hall. Hundreds will attend this. Band runs through various numbers, including the usual stuff that you hear during the game. You also get to see SC’s most famous football fan, Dr Bartner, the guy that has led the band for a million years. He is somewhat of a campus celeb.

This is fun and usually lasts around 15 mins. The band plays facing TOWARDS Heritage although people will be sitting all over the place. On the map, I put a small “X” in Noble Plaza. This is where you want to be when it starts. Also, the band plays on the walkway, not the steps or at the entrance to Heritage. Best spot to view is sitting on the steps, but good luck getting a seat there.

Spirit Rally: 1:30 hours before kickoff. In this case, 3:00PM. after the band finishes at Heritage, it heads off to some secret mini concert for the rich wealthy alum. It is literally gated off. Once they are done there, the band marches down Trousdale Parkway, the main drag through campus (used to actually be a real two way street before it was closed off). I marked the marching route on the map, although the band will likely march in a much straighter line than I drew. I also put an “X” on the map for you to see. This time, the band is marching with the Drum Major dude (He is NOT Tommy, although many call him that) and the Song Girls. Everyone stops right in front of Bovard Admin Building for the Spirit Rally. There are flagpoles here that you will see. Those flagpoles are the primo spot to watch this show. If you want a whole slew of Song Girl boobs bouncing in your face about 2 feet away, stand by these flagpoles. And have your camera ready. This is always jammed packed and it culminates with Tribute to Troy, Fight On, and Conquest. Here is a pic to give you an idea

Bovard when it is empty, view from flagpole

        Bovard during Spirit Rally

        Once that is done…..

…The band marches down Trousdale towards the Coliseum. Follow the crowd to #5 on your campus map. On your way to #5, check out the small statute of George Tirebiter in the middle of the walkway, right near the flagpoles. Tommy is not SC’s mascot. Traveler (the Horse) is the mascot. Before Traveler, it used to be George Tirebiter, an actual dog that hung around campus and chased cars as they drove down Trousdale. How did George Tirebiter die? He was run over by a car on Trousdale. Lol. How rad would it be if George Tirebiter was still SC’s mascot?

        5. The flagpoles. It is tradition before and after games to kick the base of the flagpoles. There are three poles. You can kick any of them. Kicking the base of the poles brings good luck to the team and is tradition. Visitors are welcome to kick the poles, as well. You will notice many people kicking them. If homeless people are sleeping by the flagpoles, you may kick them, too, although this will not affect the outcome of the football game.

After you kick the poles or not, you can cross the street, cut through the Rose Garden, and make your way to the Coliseum via the Science Center or whatnot. I would head to the left, not the right. That way you can see the Peristyle end of the stadium, the Naked Statues (not THAT, sickos...they are the ones you see when SC is on Game Day:

Personal preference, of course. Doesn’t really matter. Just follow the crowd. It is a 3-5 minute walk. Closer to kickoff, this place is the Food Zone, ticket scalper central, Fan Zone, etc.

After the game, you can take the reverse route back to your car if you wish. Immediately after the game, the band faces the student section (the section right behind the Song Girls) and does another mini concert. The band marches back to campus, stops at Tommy and performs Conquest. Finally, the band walks to the bookstore, does some more songs, and then they are done. Only a parent or a nerd would follow the band that much. However, if it is an esp big game, the Conquest at Tommy is generally packed (assuming a win, of course). The post game concert at the Student Section is generally well attended, also. Fans being walking over there to that section of the stadium after the game is over.

Don’t be shy about getting a bacon wrapped hot dog after the game. You can haggle and they will usually go as low as $3 each depending on how long the game has been over. You should also go to Chanos before you get to campus and then eat bacon wrapped dogs afterwards. Chanos after a game is usually ridiculous, but you should go just to hear the awesome loudspeaker guy. He is impossible to understand.

          Part 5

          A few other options:

Jock Rally: this is the day before the game, Friday evening at Heritage. This is another cool thing about the accessibility of SC football. It takes place inside Heritage and basically the entire team, the band, and the song girls jam in there and yell and scream about the game, they dance, the band plays some songs, and the coaches speak to the crowd. If you were a groupie, this would be the place to meet everyone.

Trojan Walk: this is a cool thing to see, too. The only problem is that it takes place at the exact same time as the Band Concert, 2 hours before kickoff. Right in front of the Peristyle on Christmas Tree Lane. The buses show up, the team rocks them back and forth, everyone lines up behind the ropes, and the team and coaches walk by. You can high five them or offer them free cars and apartments, whatever. The players walk through the Peristyle and down into the stadium. If it were me, I would stay on campus and check this one out at a later time. Nevertheless, thou mayest choose for thyself.

          Songs

Tribute to Troy: this is the one with the pulsating drums and the pounding brass, over and over. Accompanied by the Victory salute. You know this tune but maybe not the name.

Fight On!: the school fight song. You know this one already. Almost always accompanied by Tribute to Troy

Conquest: another tune you might recognize, maybe not. You will know it by the end of the game.

Southern California spell out: pretty self explanatory….S-o-u-t-h-e-r-n….you get the idea. Usually done in conjunction with Tribute to Troy or something else.

Tusk: this is the “UCLA sucks” song. SC played on Fleetwood Mac’s album and has used this song ever since.

If anyone has any questions let me know and I will do my best to be helpful. Also looking at SipiTau to chime in with any additional suggestions for visitors.

I hope this guide proves to be useful. It will be a fun and memorable day for Ute fans. I wish I were going.

          Fight on! :usc:

Back in the late 80's and early 90's I spent a lot of time on the USC campus. It's fun to see some of the changes from these pics especially the walk towards the flag poles. That area wasn't so nice. I'd like to go back and see if the IHOP is still there between the entrance and The Shrine. I've played a bunch of flag football on that field in the front and some pick up basketball on the courts over in the tree area. It's been a long time so I'm a little fuzzy. I love that campus. It truly is a beautiful place.

Are you going to the game or is that the same week as Texas?

Damn. Those are some award-winning posts.

I didn't expect to be moved by Slippery Pete and his Roid Crew singing "Someone to Lean On" but that's actually a pretty heartwarming scene.

One of the better things I saw on my 03 trip was when the band came onto the field, slowly, playing low, lined up behind the bench of the opposing team and began playing Tribute to Troy. Very intimidating with how close the band ends up being to the players and was something that stood out in my mind.

Bravo, 3D. Thanks so much. Just last night, Mormon Red Death and I were discussing how we're getting to this game while he took all my money in poker.

I'm thinking about showing up disguised as a large wooden horse.
