  • Note to self: next marathon, actually train.

Sooo I did Salt Lake today. Ouch, and yuck. Most of you know I'm a real estate appraiser. Interest rates in the 4's have led to me working 14-18 hour days the past two months. I go to bed at 3 in the morning at get up at 7:30. My ass is dragging. Running has been non-existent, and I paid the price today. It all added up to a 4:18 finish, I'm embarrassed to say. 32 minutes slower than my PR. It became obvious at mile 19 that a sub 4 was not in the cards. I know there's something to be said for at least finishing the damn thing, but this was an awful race.

I should probably post a little addendum here: I don't demean anyone who runs a marathon, regardless of how long it takes them. I don't mean to sound like that time is beneath me. And with people losing their jobs left and right, I'm not whining about actually having a lot of work to do. I was just a bit deflated by that race today, that's all.

Yeah, you should be SO ashamed. You're SUCH an embarrassment! Please leave the board and come back when you can actually ACCOMPLISH something difficult.

Was that you I saw crawling across Van Winkle at 5600 South about 9:30 this morning?

Perhaps you and Archaea can console each other. He was lamenting that he only came in like fifth in his age group today. I swear, it's a wonder how you people live with yourselves!!

Does anyone ever run a good Salt Lake Marathon? I don't think I've ever known someone who has actually done well in that race.

I think the winner has done pretty good a few times.

A friend of mine ran his 2nd best time today, a 3:33. They guy I ran with had his worst time ever, a 4:30. He's run 13 marathons and has never been over 4. Crazy day. They changed the course a bit and it was a horrible change. Instead of turning by the courthouse and going down to the Gateway, we went all the way up State St. to South Temple and then West. I didn't see anyone actually running up that hill on State. It was a terrible route.

Anyway...on to the next one! I'm planning on doing Top of Utah in Sept. Hopefully I can actually get some time to train this summer.

I'm planning on doing that one too. Maybe I'll see you there.

Definitely. I'm just hoping I can get some time to train right this summer.

One funny thing happened yesterday. After I crossed the finish line, I told my wife that that was it for me, I was done with marathons. Then I got in the car and checked my Facebook, and I had a friend request from Hal Higdon! I was floored, it was totally out of the blue. I'm in a Hal Higdon group on FB and I'm sure that's where he got my name, but it was cool that he sent the friend request.

4:18 and you are ashamed? It is people like you that both inspire me and make me hate myself.

Nice work RC/TDB. That is nothing to be ashamed of. On limited training, just finishing 26.2 is a heck of an accomplishment.

No wonder you changed your name to Teenage Dirtbag. You're an embarrassment to Running Cougars everywhere.

Aren't you doing an ultra in a few weeks? Sure it is not a marathon, but it will be harder and way cooler. Or is that at the end of may?

Man it helps to have something to train for. I have been doing a whole lot of nothing lately.
