  • Holy Mother of Ouch!!!!

    First, the good news.

I've been running more and more lately (thank you, Nike+!). Today was my longest yet. I set my goal at 4 miles. At 4 miles, I gave my goal the finger on the way past.

End result: A shade over 5 miles, at a 9:43 pace. While I know that a few of you (BBB and cowboy specifically jump to mind) do that sort of thing as a warm up on your easy days, keep in mind that I could barely run 2 miles at a 10:00 pace three weeks ago.

    Now, the bad news.

I stopped at 5 miles because my nipples hurt like hell. I have heard of nipple chafing, but never actually had it happen, not even when I ran track in HS (I ran shirtless). It was like somebody had strapped me down and taken an angle grinder to my nipples.

Obviously a cotton t-shirt ain't gonna cut it in the future. Do any of you have any solutions? Are there garments out there that mitigate this problem? Do I just get some moleskin?

    Finally, the funny news.

I don't know why, but my wife and I found the below video to be hilarious. I guess it's technically NSFW, but I would send a link to it to my bishop and not feel bad about it.

I've had that problem a few times, only when I go 10+ miles. I've heard some people use tape over their nipples, or put vaseline on. I used this stuff and it worked well.

Sports bra. Or in your case, a sports bro.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Technically I could only get chafing on one nipple as my other is an inny. I feel so much better that that is out in the open now.

Nikuman - I have heard band-aids are good for this purpose. I know of a few guys in college who used to do this and said it worked like a charm.

Where is that? There's some awfully nice buttes out there. I'd go just for the scenery.

Band-Aids and Vaseline both work well, as does UnderArmor or just going shirtless. The alternative is to have your nipples surgically removed.

That vid was very well done. I loved when they were getting the food. Hilarious.

Not wearing cotton pretty much solves the problem inside of 10 miles. Above that distance it wouldn't hurt to do the vaseline or the band aids or whatever. If you do nothing you eventually get used to it anyway.

Little round band-aids. I don't run more than 7 miles without them. They hurt like hell when you rip them off, but that lasts about 2 seconds. If I don't use them I'm burning all day.

OUCH is right, niku. Take a lesson from the Nardman. Either you cover them up, like this:

or you end up chafed like this:

Oh and btw, I wear under armor pretty much year round. It helps not only with the nipple and underarm chafing, but it also keeps my heart rate monitor in place.

Nik, the only way to fix this problem is to put an x over your nipples with black electrical tape, covered by a wet white t-shirt or mesh tank top.
