  • Running Shoes & Sizing

I went to a running store over the weekend to get some new running shoes. I ended up with the updated version of the last pair I ran a marathon in so I feel good about the shoe itself. The guy helping me out, though, convinced me to try an 8 instead of a 7.5 telling me I could exchange them within 30 days if I decided I didn't like it. My roommate had a similar experience the last time she shopped for shoes (ended up with 8s), and she told me they only bothered her the first time she ran in them.

I realize I've had them less than a week so it probably needs more time, but I'm wondering what any runners here think about upsizing the shoe. Running in 7.5s never bothered me (other than losing toenails if I didn't keep them super short for long runs), and I don't like hearing the end of the shoe skim on the treadmill as I get used to lifting my foot a touch higher. How many of you upsize, and do you think I'll get used to it quickly? I want to keep an open mind, but I'm still not sold I need extra room more than I need a good fit. I don't want to end up just running in socks again (what I had been doing so far this year) because I find out two months down the road that this shoe isn't better than no shoe at all.

I wear an 8.5 to 9 in regular shoes and a 9.5 to 10 in running shoes. I like a roomy toe box.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

I bought 9.5s (instead of 9) for the first time last time around, and I've really liked it. But if you like what you're using, I don't see any reason why you should mess with your system. If you're uncomfortable and change your foot placement or gait to accommodate, you risk shin splits and yucky stuff like that. That's a long way of saying, ignore the guy at the store and do whatever you want.

I upsize by 1/2 size. I've always liked the extra room.

I was wearing 8.5 (mens) and kept getting black toenails. My wife convinced me to go up to a nine and I hated it. I like a snugger fit. Now I just live with the black toes and change the subject when my wife complains about them.

I went up a half size a couple of years ago when I started putting on more miles. It seems to have been a good thing for me. I don't think I've ever had any toenail issues since the change, even on hills or during long runs. I like having a little extra room, especially when the feet swell up on a hot day. They also allow me to wear a thicker sock for a cold day or if I want more padding.

That being said, everyone is different. Like Sea Chicken, your feet may just do better with a snugger fit. He would know. I'm pretty sure he puts in more miles than any two of us combined.

I actually moved up a full size. I LOVE IT. Helped out a ton and my feet love me for it.

I'm not really adding a whole lot, but like most of the others, I also go up a half size to 10's for my running shoes and I like it a lot more for the extra space when my feet swell a little bit on the longer runs/hotter days.

I'm very weird with shoes. With running shoes, I stay at 11. I tried bigger ones, but they didn't work out very well. With basketball shoes, I go up a full size. Cleats a half size. All of the above are assuming Nike shoes - the fit varies with other brands (dress shoes run a half to a whole, depending).

I always have black toenails on my second toe only. It doesn't bother me or the missus, so I don't mind.

                    I wear a 8.5 regularly and wear a 9 running shoe.

I think fit is everything, and it varies from shoe to shoe. I always wear the same socks, and am pretty picky about those, since that's a key to shoes fitting properly. Thorlo socks really make a difference for me.

I was surprised the first time I went to a running shoe store and was fitted. I have always worn 9.5 or 10s in regular shoes, and the girl fitting my put me in a size 11. She said I should have plenty of room. I was honestly pretty concerned about slipping and blistering from in shoes a full size larger than I typically wear, but they have worked out great.

I ran barefoot last night, but I'll try the larger shoes again this week. Sounds like I just need a little more time to get used to them.

                          Thanks, all.

Barefoot? Are you one of those barefoot runners? Crazy.

I should rephrase. I'll run in socks if it's on a treadmill (and even then, I lather my feet up in Vaseline or Aquaphor to avoid callouses). I'm too vain to be a barefoot runner.
