  • Utah Recruiting needs for 2012

    Here is a breakdown of the incoming roster by position to assess depth and recruiting needs. Also if I have any players out of position or I am missing anyone, please let me know and I will update it

    * denotes a player expected in the fall

    If Robles does not start to improve with the changes in the offense, I wouldn't be surprised to see another JC and a HS recruit in 2012 at QB. If he does pick it up, we only take a HS player.

    I expect we will take only 1 High School RB.

    We need a full court press during recruiting here. A JC and HS recruit would not be a surprise.

    Decent talent here, but the type of player recruited is going to change. One or two HS players is my expectation.

    We are overloaded here. I expect 1 or 2 of the incoming freshman to be at a different position by the time fall camp is complete. I think that we try to land 1 elite level receiver unless the current crop of players are not up to snuff in the Pac-12, then we may see a bigger group recruited.

    Thin doesn't even describe the depth issues we have at this position. Given the offer list already out for Tackle, the coaches see it as well. 2-3 here would not be a surprise. The common belief is that Robles will be mission bound this fall so won't contribute for a few years.

    Already one committed guard(Kiha Sai). We will likely pick up another 1 or 2 as well.

    Looks thin here, but this is a place that guards can be transitioned if they have the ability to make the line calls. So I don't know if we will recruit a true center or move a recruit here later.

    We are stacked here for certain, but we need to keep filling the pipeline. Should see 2 recruits here with the new class.

    Currently set pretty well here, esp if Joe Kruger lives up to his current hype. This is a target area for recruiting and should take 2 this season.

    With 3 players graduating and some question marks in the Jr. group, I think we are going to be very young at this position in 2012. We may target a JC, but will likely shoot for 3-4 players who they project to be LB.

    Plenty of youth here and plenty of talent. Hopefully they will live up to the hype. Not as much need here in recruiting in other areas so I think we will only end up with one HS safety in 2012.

    With Walker targeted as the starter in the fall, we will only recruit High schoolers here. This may be a place that a few more Wide Receivers end up as well.

    I expect that we will see 3-4 CB's targeted this year with one of them possibly being a JC guy. Cornerback is a tough position to guage recruiting wise because so many RB's and WR's have been moved here over the years.

    So to summarize, I see our needs as:

    QB-1
    RB-2
    FB-1
    TE-2
    WR-1
    T-2
    G-2
    C-1?

    DT-2
    DE-2
    LB-3
    FS-1
    SS-1
    CB- 3

    With only 12 seniors on scholarship, there is going to be some attrition and/or multiple players in new roles in 2012 to meet these needs.

    You've got the numbers by position at 23 (22 excluding center). I would be surprised if Utah exceeded 20 signees in the class.

    -I don't think they'll sign a RB;
    -I don't think it's necessary to target a true center, and I can't remember the last time Utah did so;
    -I would guess that the total number of FB/TE signees is 2, with the idea of them being interchangable to a degree;
    -It's hard to speculate on the potential signees, even with the knowledge of their positions on signing day, because it's so fluid between the time they step on campus and even when they make their first start. Sean Smith was a running back, then a receiver, before getting moved to corner and flourishing. Zane Taylor was a defensive tackle before playing guard, then center.
