Lowe's adjusted their Levolor blinds displays over the weekend, I think nationwide, and they put out the old blinds (1 & 2", horizontal, wood, vertical, vinyl, metal) and room darkeners/pull shades for 75% off the lowest marked price. We got 5 sets of their premium blinds and 3 room darkeners, cut to size, for $63 tax included.

If you have a chance and are considering getting/changing something, I'd hurry.

My wife is elated that I finally took down the old shimmery ca. 1987 pink custom-made curtains in our formal living room. The new reed room darkeners in their place look great and took me about 30 mins to install across a 110" span.

It's going to get ugly overseas when food prices skyrocket, especially rice and corn. Heaven help us if rice or bananas ever fail.

I thought bananas were being wiped out with some disease. What happened with that?

The new strain, Tropical Race 4 Panama Disease hasn't made its way to the Americas yet, and it's slow moving, but it is airborne. You can flood land for a time, and replant, but it will usually return. Its virulence isn't fast-moving, but it is catastrophic because all Cavendish bananas are exact DNA matches. Uganda is hoping to plant new varieties to prepare for when Race 4 gets there, but that's tough because they have seeds, and so much of their caloric intake comes from bananas. Also, genetic research is difficult on Gros Michel and Cavendish because they reproduce asexually, and there is no genetic variation in those cultivars to work with.

Where was this deal when I needed it? I severely underestimated the cost of blinds. Our home was fitted with aluminum mini blinds. Some were broken. A few fell just from trying to lower them. And our HOA doesn't like broken blinds very much. So we decided to replace the whole home.

I ended up going with Select Blinds. They had a July 4th sale where it was 30% and buy 3 get 1 free. What sucks though is if your order was for 6 blinds you didn't get 2 free, you just got 1 free. So I ended up placing 4 orders to take advantage of the deal. It was frustrating but well worth the cost because I have some big double windows and those are expensive. Just finished installing them all and they look nice. It wasn't the cheapest option. I priced out Lowe's and Home Depot's cheapest 2" faux wood blinds and they were about $40-50 less. However, I would have had to adjusted the length for about 9 of the windows. If you have ever done that, you know what a PITA that is. That was worth paying the extra money to have the width and length custom fit.

we did our entire house for about $1100 through an online company. Island blinds I think it was.

When I was pricing blinds one day at Home Depot the Bali rep was there and she says to me that if I am doing a whole house they are having a ridiculous deal. So I asked what it was and she said it was comparable to Home Depot's decorators brand with the deal they were running. So I said okay give me a quote. By comparable she meant over $500 more than the blinds I was there pricing. She then told me that I get what you pay for and tried to sell me on how much better their faux wood was than Home Depot's.

                    You don't have plantation shutters?

                    Yeesh. JK

We have plantation shutters in our house and honestly best thing ever. I couldn't imagine putting them in myself as I couldn't swallow the expense (I freaked when I installed blinds in a previous home, incredibly expensive) but the next house I will buy one of the things I will look for is shutters.

We got some really nice faux wood blinds from Select blinds for our dining room. They've been up for four years and still look great. I think you'll be pleased long term.
