  • BYU 2008 vs. Utah 2010

Here's one I have been thinking about for awhile.

Which team was better, BYU 2008 or Utah 2010? The parallels between each team's season make this comparison intriguing.

    Some similarities:
Both had top 10 rankings in the national polls.
    Both had identical 10-3 records.
Both had ugly losses to TCU (BYU 32-7, Utah 47-7).
Both had one other ugly loss to a top 10 team
    BYU to Utah (48-24)
    Utah to Boise State (26-3)
    Both lost their bowl game
Both had 3 close wins that probably should not have been that close
    BYU-Washington, 28-27; UNLV, 42-35; Colorado State, 45-42
    Utah-BYU, 17-16; Air Force, 28-23; San Diego State, 38-34
Average Margin of victory in the other seven games: BYU-29.7, Utah-34.9

    Some differences to note:
BYU had 2 shutouts, Utah had zero.
BYU scored fewer than 20 points one time, Utah four times.
Utah scored more than 50 four times, BYU one time.
BYU had zero overtime wins, Utah had one.

Full season schedule for each team:

    Northern Iowa 41-17 W
    @ Washington 28-27 W
    UCLA 59-0 W
    Wyoming 44-0 W

    San Diego State 41-12 W

    Utah 2010

    UNLV 38-10 W

The close wins comparison swings it to Utah, and two of those teams won nine games. BYU was the worst of the teams Utah defeated in 2010, but that BYU team is miles better than any of the teams BYU had narrow victories against in 2008.

Washington went winless in 2008, and went 1-11 ATS. 2010 Utah throttled mediocre teams with that resume.

Utah went 4-3 against bowl teams, while BYU went 2-3. More bowl teams, more wins, better W-L.

My reasoning? I'm a big BYU fan.

After a great deal of thought and analysis, I am confident in saying the BYU team was clearly better.
