  • Holy #$!@!~ I am pathetic

We did the Emerald Pools hike at Zion today. About 3 miles total per the signs, and they say it's one of the easier hikes in terms of ascent.

I felt like I was going to die. Gasping, wheezing, asthma kicking in, quads in pain on the way up, back and knees on the way down. And now I feel like I've been through a prizefight.

    Pathetic!

    Yeah, don't do Angel's Landing.

Riverside Walk and Weeping Rock are easier. You really need to do the Canyon Overlook too. There's a climb at the beginning, but the rest is totally flat.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Riverside is our plan for tomorrow.

Well I figure not going on the hike would be even more pathetic. Plus no way Mrs. FM and the kids would go without me and I want my kids to experience it.

On the plus side, FITDAY says I burned 1400 calories on the hike so that's a good thing. Thanks Pelagius!

All I have to do is move to Zion and hike like that every day and maybe I won't be so pathetic!

You are a trooper and a good dad.

Hiking/backpacking has to be one of the most loathsome activities on my loathsome activity list. I have hated it since Boy Scouts. Everyone seems to love it but me, so chalk that up to another oddball thing about me.

You probably burned more than that.

You should double dip on some of the activities.

For example, don't just enter "hike."

Also do a search for "wheezing" and "gasping." Those things burns calories, too.

I'm pretty sure if I tried Angel's Landing there's a good chance I'd be coming to see you at work.

I am right there with you. Maybe it was the constant 3 day trips as a scout and the botched 50 milers each summer but I hate hiking. I did get back into it though the last year or two I was living in Salt Lake. Gidget loves it and so does my daughter. We bought a nice pack to put her in from REI and would do simple hikes like Doughnut Falls or the trail in the gully behind our home in Cottonwood Heights. These weren't grueling by any means. Just a good time outside with the fam.

You'll have to give me a campground status update on Wednesday if you're still there. For now, we're going to Capitol Reef, but I think Zions would be a better choice if we don't want to move the RV around. Anything you can find out about how full the South Campground (no reservations) will be on Thursday mid-day would be appreciated.

I'm with you, brother. I hate, hate, hate hiking. HATE it. I'm a triple-palmed Eagle Scout and I hate it. What the hell is the point of walking somewhere if you're just going to get there and say, "Well, that was neat. Let's go back down now." Makes no sense to this brain. Hate it.

                              That's sad, Tim.

You remind me of the guy that went to the Grand Canyon and said, "Big deal. It's just a bunch of sandstone."

And can we please separate scouting from hiking/backpacking? The vast majority of outdoor enthusiasts probably never experienced scouting.
