Volleyball can be a pretty entertaining spectator sport.

Kids at BYU have known that for a while.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid growing up were watching my father play in the Police Olympics and other tournaments. We lived relatively close to CSUN too so we'd go to their matches all the time so the Matadors have a soft spot for me.

I've also noticed that it's one of those "family" type sports where you see some 40 year old guy bringing his 12 year old to teach her how to play, and everybody's cool with that. And you get some pretty good players from Europe and Latin America here in Houston.

Sadly, while the local HS scene is developing, the quality of play isn't up to CA/HI par.

I've actually been surprised by the level of play in other states, particularly Utah. Maybe it's the influx of Californians and Polys there but even free play games in the RB or SFH were always competitive. I miss playing intramural or grass/sand games. Pennsylvania is another state that has good volleyball. Virginia, meh. Not bad. Not great. You have good players still, but not enough together usually to be impressed.

            It's "white flight" from basketball.

There is more truth to that than I think many will profess.

The other sport I think this applies to is lacrosse. Much like the Arsenio Hall show you are going to see a slow death for basketball for a lot of the same reasons.
