  • Hot Water Heater

My drip pan has about 1/4 inch of water in it and I can see the gold spout dripping inecessantly. It is not horrible but dripping non-stop. Does this mean my Hot Water Heater is going out? Or is there something I can do to fix the old one?

I am not very smart when it comes to house hold chores so keep that in mind.

It could just mean your relief valve has a leak. This same thing happened to us this summer. It was just a matter of replacing it which is pretty easy to do.

How old is it? Mine was about 10 years old when it started doing what you're describing. It was the beginning of the end and I had to replace it within about 2 weeks of noticing that leak.

Why do you need to heat hot water?

My MIL always says "dethaw", which gives me the perfect opportunity to toy with her:

MIL: "Will you go get the chicken from the freezer so we can dethaw it for dinner tomorrow"

Me: "I just checked. It's already dethawing in the freezer."

MIL: "What?! Did the freezer get unplugged somehow?"

                  Me: "No"

                  MIL: "I'm confused."

                  Me: "I know."

Sadly, this same conversation has taken place numerous times. I usually then volunteer to get the chicken out of the freezer so it can de-unthaw.

                    What is it with MILs?

My in-laws refer to their swamp cooler as "the cooler." They also refer to any form of AC as "the cooler." If we are in the car, they will ask if we can turn on "the cooler."

Also, my MIL takes it a step further and refers to any sort of central HVAC as "the cooler." So this winter, she will ask if we are warm enough, because if not, she can "turn up the cooler" to "warm" and heat up the house.

I have had this same conversation with my mother. Dethaw is one of my favorites.

I was just about to defend your MIL, until that last one. Coolers can't heat things.

My wife says "turn down the air," meaning "lower the temp" and "turn up the air" meaning increase the temp. All while talking about air conditioning. It was really confusing for a few years. She kept asking me to turn down the air, so I'd turn the AC off, but she really wanted me to make it colder in the house. Then she'd ask me to turn up the AC, so I'd crank the AC up to full blast, when what she really wanted was for me to turn it off (or just make it warmer in the house).

Bump. We moved into a new house back in July, and the first thing I noticed was the water heater makes "popping" noises when it gets used. I've flushed it out and tried a couple other things, but I've determined it needs to be replaced. We have extremely hard water (more calcified than the water at my prior house just a few miles away, even) and the house doesn't have a water softener. The house is 12 years old and the water heater is original to the house, so it's had a good run, but it's time to go. Time for a new water heater and a water softener.

Here's my question: is there a better place to buy a water heater than a big box hardware store like Lowe's or Home Depot? For some reason I always feel like those places carry crap appliances, and the good stuff they carry is significantly marked up. Would a plumbing wholesaler be a better place to look? Or are you generally getting the same product anymore?

Here are the two I'm currently considering:

                          From Home Depot:

                          http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rheem-Per...1?N=5yc1vZc1tz

                          From Standard Plumbing Supply:

                          http://www.standardplumbing.com/shop...ith-power-vent

The one from Standard Plumbing Supply is about $100 less. But other than that, is there a significant difference between these two (other than the power vent, whatever that means)?

Ha. While up at the in-laws for Christmas, my MIL was talking about the dethawing the ham.

                            "It's already de-thawing" I told her.
"Oh, did you get it out of the freezer?"
                            "No."
                            "Well then who did?"
                            "Nobody. It's still in there."

No matter how many times I do this, she always falls for it. Never gets old.

What in the hell do you need a 75 gallon tank for? Our 50 gallon just went out a few days before Christmas. I called a plumber. I could not even tell you what kind he installed.
