Can anyone explain why Mitch Mustain transferred to USC?

Got my RipsIt email from Petey today. Here is the official USC story:

"Mustain was promoted to the Razorbacks’ starting quarterback in 2006 after his debut against USC. He started eight games, the most ever by an Arkansas true freshman, and won them all. Mustain’s highlights at Arkansas included throwing a touchdown pass in double-overtime for a win against Alabama and quarterbacking Arkansas to an upset of No. 2 Auburn on the road.

Looking to play for a team with a different style, Mustain transferred to USC in 2007."

    wha.......?

Closest USC fan. I grew up around the team, but I am only casual fan now. TD should be here soon enough spreading his sauce all over this thread...

Mustain only went to Arkansas because his highschool head coach became the offensive coordinator. Gus Malzahn (who is now Tulsas OC) had no college experience, most think Houston Nutt just hired him so that he could land Mustain. Well Nutt did not allow Malzahn to truly coach the offense and had him on a very short leash. Mustain was splitting time with Casey Dick and after his freshman year Malzahn left for Tulsa. Mustain left shortly after as he didnt think Malzahn received a fair shot, and he was upset with having to compete with Dick. Malzahn has since left Tulsa (after having the number 1 offense in the nation) and he has joined Gene Chizik at Auburn as QB coach and O-coordinator. Mustain went to USC because he really liked Sark (who coincidentally is no longer there) and he wants to play in a pro-style offense.

We'll find out how much of a competitor Mustain is this spring. He's not the favorite to win the spot; I've heard PC is leaning towards Corp, we'll see how things shape up.

Whomever wins the job will have the luxury of having 4 returning starters back on a great OL. The 5th starter from last year just found out he's eligible for a 6th year, so there's a possibility of having all 5 guys back.

Well that pretty much tied up all the loose ends of the question.

I always thought that Mitch Mustain would make such a great sports movie character name.

If Corp gets the job, Mustain wont ever start again.

                QB Candidates:

                Sr: Green
                Jr: Mustain
                So: Corp
                Fr: Barkley

I think its between Mustain and Corp right now.

I think USC is a decent squad of fellows. Perhaps I can shed some additional light.

Junkie is correct on all accounts, with the exception of a few details. Since this is probably the only time I may know something that Junkie doesn't, I will go ahead and enjoy my 2 minutes. Junkie outlined why Mitch left Arkansas, but the reason why he chose SC? (after all, he could have transfered to several schools). It comes down to 2 main reasons and these are straight from Mitch himself.

                    1. SC had been riding a wave since about 2001. Mitch was able to see SC absolutely destroy Arkansas in a home and home. Seeing SC play really impressed him. The were coming off 3 Heismans, a few NC games, they are on TV all the time, etc. More importantly, he was able to see that PC truly plays the best players, not the upperclassmen. Mitch felt like he had a shot to transfer to SC and be the man right away. Of course, we all know how that turned out....
                    2. Damian Williams had already transferred to SC and was there helping persuade Mitch to come, too. Mitch and Damian were teammates in HS and then teammates at Arkansas and are still close friends. I really think that had DW not transferred to SC, Mitch likely would have stayed closer to home.

The ironic thing is that when DW came to SC, it was a "nice" story, but nothing huge. When Mitch chose SC, it was front page news here in LAl. He was going to be the future under center for SC. Now fast forward and tell me which player, by FAR, has been the huge freaking shiz for the Trojans? Damian freaking Williams, no contest.

                      One other thing.

Mitch was turned off by Houston Nutt's affair with the local TV reporter, so he wanted to transfer to a place where he could feel the Spirit and play in a moral environment.

They don't call him Nutt for nothing.

I can't say for sure, but I would be willing to bet that at least one of the local papers used some sort of play on "Houston, we have a problem."

                            Or "Nutt busted over reporter."
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
