  • Stripped out door hinge

So...TK1 decided to shut a door real good. The broom handle was stuck in the door, but by golly she got it to shut anyways. It stripped out the lower hinge on the door jamb itself.

What product should I use so those holes in the door frame will take screws again?

    Freaking kids.

stripped out the holes in the jamb, or the metal screw heads?

I've done this a couple times. Stuff match sticks in the holes. I didn't think it would work, but it actually does. Hammer in a couple more after you can't stuff them in with your hands.

I've tried match sticks but the wood in the match sticks is too soft and the screws don't take real well. I've had better luck with wood dowels and glue.

this is what I was going to suggest. The same thing happened to my screen door a month ago, the hinge pin had rusted and instead of opening right, it just tore the screws out of both the door and the jam. Dowels did the trick.

Like Jay, I've used the matchstick method (with wood glue) before, and it worked, but dowels sound like an even better, more reliable solution.

Just small dowels the size of the current holes and glue them in?

Or do I need to drill em out a bit.

              Stripped out the wood Wuap.

Drill them out to the size of the dowels, then mark the depth on the bit with a piece of tape, keeping in mind the length of the screws (i.e. not very long). Use a chisel to trim them flush if needs be. I let mine set overnight because it was both door and jamb and I wanted to make sure the glue had set, but depending on the situation that might not be necessary.

I didn't drill them out, but it might not be a bad idea if the remaining hole isn't clean.

I have nothing to add as it has all been said. I was going to suggest the dowells/glue. I have plenty of experience repairing stripped door hinges, you know...with my volatile temper and all.....

oh yeah, a quick text to me could have gotten you the answer quicker. :friendlyflipoff:

The dowel/matchstick technique works well if the surrounding wood is intact. If not, I have used a combination of epoxy glue and sawdust to fill in the hole and any surrounding damaged wood. Let it set and then redrill.
