Short term hit, long-term gain. If you're a blue chip recruit at DB, you really can't go wrong at Utah.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

This hurts, but KW seems to be able to find someone to fill in that does a capable job. All the best to Burton.

Hopefully a good move for Burton and his family.

I don't remember which board was the host of the following observation. If it was here, I apologize for reposting a thought. Regardless, I apologize to the thinker of the thought since I cannot remember who it was to give them credit.

Anyway, someone pointed out that Boise and TCU seem to rarely lose players early to the NFL draft.

Utah seems to lose a lot of guys early.

I wonder why there is such a difference.

I think it hurts Utah in maintaining consistency when they lose guys early to the draft, such as Burton.

Boise just put a CB (Wilson?) in the league, but didn't he play all four years?

Maybe those players just like their college experiences at those schools more.

I hope he succeeds. His stock certainly dropped like a rock all year. Maybe he thought there was no upside in a senior season, particularly against great Pac 10 receiver talent. Playing our new schedule will no doubt make or break a lot of guys as they get more opportunities to match up against NFL type talent.

Utah always has DBs and RBs, I never get excited about them being weak at those positions. Somehow they always find talent there.

I wonder if it is how the coaches discuss the decision with kids. Majerus seemed to be able to convince kids to stay. Dean Smith was content with the revolving door, whereas Duke didn't have a player leave early until Jayson Williams(then it seemed to become more frequent). I wonder if Kyle is more encouraging to kids who get a favorable evaluation even if it is not in his best interest to do so.

I think the revolving door potentially hurts basketball programs a lot more because of the instability issue. No blue-chip recruit wants to spend four years in college, so it's a recruiting bonus, and the downside isn't that big.

It'll be interesting to see where he goes in relation to Sean Smith. Smith went in the second round after having his stock sky-rocket from a great season. Burton started as a late first-early second rounder and has had some real rough games this season. Hopefully for his sake he can recoup some of that at the combine, and if he's getting the right advice, I would think he'd still go no later than the third round.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Sending players to the NFL is always a recruiting bonus but I'm unsure if there's any bonus to sending players early. The upside to going early is money, avoiding an injury while an amateur, and avoiding having a poor SR year and going later in the draft the following year. The downside is the player not improving his draft position. A first round prediction and the associated money is usually a no brainer. But there's also an opportunity cost to going in the 3rd round early and going in the first round a year later. Sam Bradford, QB-Oklahoma, had nothing to gain for staying longer. Conversely, Ndamukong Suh, DT-Nebraska, improved his draft stock from 2nd/3rd round to high in the first round for staying.

Besides the money, going in the first couple of rounds pretty much guarantees the player will make an NFL roster since a GM doesn't want to look like an idiot for making a poor draft selection. It's much harder to make an NFL roster for a player that's not one of the first couple of choices by the team that drafts him.

Another thing that may play into his decision is the pending NFL owners/players contract negotiations. All the pundits are saying that the money for rookies is going to be drastically lowered. So maybe a 3rd or 4th round contact this year may be worth as much as a 1st - 2nd round contract next year.

Or there's an NFL lockout in 2011 in which case a player going early will make less than he would playing in college (once room and board and stipend are factored). Lot of uncertainty right now. I've heard this was a main reason why some players are staying for their senior year rather than going early.
