  • Cougars keeping excellent company

So which of the game's fallen giants had it the worst?
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This article stings, but it is hard to argue with the truth, Cougar fans.

If there's one thing that sets apart the 2010 college-football season, it's how humiliating it has been for so many of the nation's proudest programs. We're not just talking about an off year, like the one Penn State had. That happens. We're talking about several of the sport's biggest names enduring preposterous frustrations and indignities all in the same season.
You just don't expect schools with national/global fanbases like SC, Texas, Florida, BYU, etc to go through stuff like this, esp everyone in the same season.

Particularly when Florida and Texas were on the verge of a national title way back in 2009.

Also, BYU's four straight 10-win seasons.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

USC's fall is perfectly understandable, given all the fallout from their complete disregard for the rules and quality coaching hires.

How does that saying go. Something like, I don't care if they are talking about me positively or negatively, just as long as they are talking about me.

No tears for any of these programs.

SC, Texas, and Florida wish they had the international fan base that we have. Frankly, I don't like to be lumped in with those common schools that merely have a national following.

Articles like that must irritate the hell out of the fans of MWC teams. We are not the same as they are and everyone outside the intermountain west knows it. I recall in 2005 I spent part of the bowl season in Philadelphia and one of my fellow associates, upon realizing I was a BYU fan, asked me if we had always had red in our school colors or if that was a new thing for the Fiesta Bowl the previous year. He was shocked to find out that there was a school known as Utah.

I had a phone interview for my current job and the guy going over my resume notes BYU and then asks randomly if I am a Steelers fan. Not knowing if I should say yes or no as it could potentially affect any offer, I ask why? He then starts talking about Chris Kemoeatu and how he graduated from school the same time I did. I was in a pickle. I explained I saw him play a number of times but that he went to Utah which is the state public school about 35 miles north of BYU. He had no clue that Utah and BYU were two different schools. I quickly added that Chris Hoke and Brett Keisel though were BYU grads and he loved that. I should thank them for my job someday.

The author of the article [Darren Everson - WSJ] is making 2010 appear more dramatic than it is. This season is no more "extreme" than some other years in the past couple of decades. In other words, every season there are "sport's biggest names enduring preposterous frustrations and indignities all in the same season." Everson is a Chicago based Big Ten homer and his world probably seems out of alignment because Michigan, Penn St., and Notre Dame are out of the rankings.

The fact is every program goes through rebuilding or down years. At present, there are 6 of the Top 10 programs not currently ranked in the AP poll. It's possible that Michigan, Penn St., and/or Notre Dame win their bowl game and become ranked in the final AP poll. If that happens then Everson's world is probably back in alignment and 2010 will appear no different that 2001, 2000, or 1997 where 5 Top 10 programs were not ranked in the final AP poll.

Here's a quick synopsis of Top 10 programs ranked in the final AP poll:
2010: 4 (but that could change) Not ranked: Mich, Texas, ND, PSU, Tenn, USC
2009: 6; not ranked: Mich, ND, OU, Tenn
2008: 6; not ranked: Mich, ND, Neb, Tenn
2007: 6; not ranked: ND, Neb, PSU, Bama
2006: 8; not ranked: Neb, Bama
2005: 8; not ranked: Mich, Tenn
2004: 6; not ranked: ND, Neb, PSU, Bama
