• Do Mess with Texas

Does anyone have a pulse on what is happening down in Austin in the past few weeks? This is a massive story that is getting little run, likely because of Scam Newton and/or Coach Urban Meyer.

To recap:

1. Greg Davis (OC) "retires."
2. Both line coaches resign.
3. Muschamp quits (DC) to go to FL.
4. Now there are reports that the RB coach, Applewhite (and a candidate for OC at UT), and the Asst. HC & DBs coach, Akina, are wanted for the coordinator spots at FL.

http://www.onlygators.com/12/12/2010...-coordinators/

Akina's wikipedia already lists him as FL's DC.

That is some major coaching turnover on the heels of a losing season and esp for a high caliber program like UT. Not a good way to go into LOI Day.

And does any of this have to do with the emergence of Jake Heaps and his impending visit next season?

Texas is in trouble and this goes way beyond those fugly plaster statues they just put up on campus.

Babs is getting much better at what she does. It took her over two years to take down Cougarguard, only six months to decimate Bevo.

The national/intl BYU fanbase most definitely had a hand in this. I don't think I've ever seen staff turnover like that. SC has had their fair share leave, but not at this level. Good luck to Mack Brown. He might as well write off 2011.

Wasn't he the 2 Live Crew frontman? Have illegal downloads hurt the music industry so badly that he has to get a day job as a sports reporter? I'll bet he really keeps his editor on his toes.

That's what I thought when I heard Luther Campbell.. and it seems to have been confirmed by the headline on that article's reference to "Uncle Luke"

Did you guys not see ESPN's 30 for 30 special, "The U?"

Luke was all over that thing. He coaches HS football and hangs around the U doing who knows what.

Lots of soul searching going on in Austin...

Sunday night OB posting from Chip Brown...

1. Everything I'm hearing is that Major Applewhite is NOT headed to Florida as offensive coordinator under Will Muschamp. From the information I've gathered, Muschamp is targeting someone with more play-calling experience for OC.

I think Muschamp would love to hire Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart to head his defense in Gainesville, although that's a tricky one for Muschamp because it takes a top assistant off his mentor, Nick Saban's staff. Still Muschamp and Smart are best friends, who both went to Georgia. Also, Florida has never paid an assistant close to the $750,000 Smart currently makes at Bama. So we'll see how much pull Muschamp has.

2. Applewhite figures to be in the mix for the OC job at Texas, although that buzz is not at a feverish pitch yet.

3. Sources I talked to close to former Miami coach Randy Shannon tonight are expressing that Shannon is very interested in the new defensive coordinator vacancy at Texas.

Contrary to a Houston Chronicle report a few years ago that Mack Brown was about to hire Shannon when Brown ultimately hired Muschamp, Brown did not even talk to Shannon then.

The two had never met prior to Muschamp's departure for Florida. So they may be getting to know each other quickly.

4. In talking with some parents of players tonight, they sounded excited about the possibility of Shannon being in the mix to replace Muschamp.

5. It's no secret Muschamp was beloved by the players, especially on defense. I mean beloved.

6. Shannon was a solid defensive coordinator at The U from 2001-06, leading guys like Ed Reed and Sean Taylor and finishing in the Top 10 in total defense in all those years except for 2004 (28th).

7. Former Longhorns defensive back Jerry Gray, who is now coaching the secondary of the Seattle Seahawks (Earl Thomas), would love to get back to Austin. He'd love to be in the mix for the Texas DC job, according to sources close to Gray.
Another possible DC candidate would be Everett Withers, who coached with Mack when he first arrived at Texas (defensive backs coach 1998-2000) and has worked in the NFL. Withers is currently the defensive coordinator for the North Carolina Tar Heels.

8. Don't look for Clemson DC Kevin Steele's name to be in the mix for the Texas defensive coordinator job. Even though Steele and Mack Brown are friends, Steele is a native of Dillon, South Carolina, and has really enjoyed being at Clemson (and he makes good coin there from what I hear).

9. The new defensive coordinator hire should be made in plenty of time for the Texas juniors on defense who are awaiting their NFL draft evaluations to make an informed decision about their futures. The deadline to declare early is mid-January.

10. Those trying to make a big deal out of what Will Muschamp did or did not like about the way things were going at Texas should consider the job Muschamp left for - Florida.

It's not like he left in a huff to take over at Iowa State. Even Muschamp knows he's following a legend and that it will be difficult. But he would have been following a legend at Texas, too.

OB's on Shannon:

After a long Sunday that did not include a lot of communication between the two parties, a source with knowledge of the discussions confirms that the Longhorns have reached out to former Miami head coach Randy Shannon and that the two sides are in conversation about the open defensive coordinator position.

According to my source, Shannon worked behind the scenes on Sunday to let people close to the Longhorn program know that he was very interested in the job and by the end of the night the earliest discussions had begun to take place. I've yet to hear if the Longhorns have officially offered the job to Shannon.

As we reported last night, the relationship between Mack and Shannon is limited to say the least, as the two have never met and possibly never even talked to each other before this weekend. That's not to say that Shannon isn't the top candidate or won't eventually receive the offer to be the defensive coordinator, but it is an indication this process could take more time than Mack simply making a phone call to Shannon and asking he wants the job.

Regardless, "the ball is in motion" this morning, which is more than we were able to confirm early Sunday night.

They will be fine. This is a great time for a good coach to join the Texas staff. Worst season in a decade but lots of young talent. Nowhere to go but up.

I agree that they will turn it around but do you think that next season may be the same as this season...or worse?

That is just an incredible amount of coaching turnover....OC, DC, o-line, d-line, and other skill position coaches all gone.

Also, how will it affect recruiting? Texas has a really solid class this year so it could withstand the blow. I'm just surprised that this isnt a bigger story.
