  • No Billy Packer this year

It's amazing that this hasn't been talked about more. You can look at it two ways: 1) People don't appreciate this enough; or 2) No one misses Packer at all so no one is talking about it. It's probably a combination of both.

I really loved his call on St. Joe's back in 2004 and their coach mixing up with him. Then St. Joe's goes on and makes the Final Four. Packer was such an ass.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I do not miss hearing him call a game while having his head lodged inside Coach K's hind end. Not one bit.

How that guy hung around as long as he did at CBS for one of the top 3 sporting events is beyond me. Football has John Madden. College Football had Keith Jackson. Baseball had Jack Buck. The Dodgers have Scully and the Lakers had Chick Hearn. All of these guys are/were beloved figures.

But Billy Packer lasted for over 30 years and everyone hated him. He tried to make college basketball as joyless as possible. CBS should just put Bill Rafferty and Gus Johnson together and call it good.

My guess is that Packer had pictures of CBS Sports executives they didn't want released to the public.
