  • Bronco vs. Whit

    They ended up 3-3 against one another, but I'm interested in playing what if.

    Had Whit taken the BYU job, would he have done any better than Bronco has done in his 6 years?

    Whit is a good coach, but I have a hard time believing he could have managed the uniqueness of coaching at BYU (honor code, missionaries, etc) better than Bronco has done.

    Thoughts?

    He does a good job of parlaying the academically sketchy and morally questionable into a functioning football unit.

    Bronco has to do the same with the nerds, goody-goodies, and behaviorally repressed.

    Advantage= Bronco

      Bronco has done what Crowton was never able to do in that he's wholly embraced the uniqueness of BYU's history and identity, and has made the most out of what he's been dealt. I think Whit is a very good coach, but I don't think he has the fire about the BYU schtick that Bronco harnesses to win. I think they both ended up in places that fit them well.

        You mean Bronco inherited a loaded roster of talent and never had to gamble on recruits that had no intention of living the honor code?

        Remember when Crowton took over a team with the WRs were Toby Christensen and Andrew Ord were the best of 15 WRs on scholarship?

          The day that Bronco goes 13-0 and wins a BCS bowl against a top 5 team we can have this discussion. Till then, it's not even close.

            How can you be certain Whit could have done that at BYU?

              I think Bronco would have been a square peg in a round hole at Utah and I think KW would have been a round peg in a square hole at BYU.

              Although, I do think if the roles were completely reversed, KW would have fared better at BYU than Bronco at Utah.

                I agree. I think KW's advantage was coaching under Meyer and learning that offense. KW could have brought that to BYU. Not sure what Bronco could have taken to Utah as their defense is already usually stout.

                  I believe that Bronco has become a square peg because that is what he feels is required to do as the BYU HC. I remember the stories of Bronco the wild man at New Mexico and early days at BYU.

                      I particularly enjoyed it when he made them functional enough to go undefeated.
