  • I'm officially worried about Heaps' accuracy

The guy is simply atrocious right now. Airmailing screen passes, hitting back shoulders every time on crossing routes, can't even put enough touch on a swing pass that gets picked for a TD. There might have been 3 or 4 truly accurate passes out of the 18 he threw.

He's averaging barely 52% completions and less than 9 yards per completion. That sucks beyond description. If BYU can't even trust him to be accurate in the short game how in the world is he going to progress?

Fortunately, accuracy is something that is theoretically correctable, but I'm concerned now that even when he learns to make the reads and deliver the ball on time that it's just not going to hit the target anyway.

P.S. It was nice to see him get his first TD pass in 186 attempts.

He actually had 2 TD passes today.

They were discussing this on some radio station on my way home - and they made a good point. He's now throwing with "touch" but is missing targets by a foot or two.

Seems like the receivers need to learn how to catch his passes when they have pace on them...

Before this week, he was dead last in the nation in ypa and second to last by .1 in QB rating. So yes, he's been quite disappointing.

The usual excuses apply, however, and I still think he'll probably end up fine if a good coaching change is made. His head just doesn't seem right at the moment.

I agree with this, but it doesn't make it any easier to watch . He missed a lot, I mean a lot of easy throws today.

This might be an exaggeration but imho he's the worst qb in the nation including the 15 or so other freshmen.

Maybe Heaps should really consider going on a mission. In two years people may have forgotten how bad he was as a freshman.

But he can throw it really really far!

Finally watched the game on my DVR this morning.

Heaps is pretty consistently throwing behind receivers on crossing routes. I think that can be corrected with more reps. All the shorter passes that he seems to struggle with should also improve with more reps. Call me delusional (LA Ute) but I still thinks Heaps will be a very good QB by next season.

The Pick-6 really was an incredible choke -- a pretty good circa 1999 Chuck Knoblauch impersonation.

Perhaps, it is way to early to tell. I've watched all of Heaps college throws, probably 50% of Locker's, I saw both of them play in HS. Locker has always been a freakish athlete, but I never thought he was going to be a an NFL quality QB. A lot of pro scouts disagree with me. I think Heaps can be a good college QB and maybe play at the next level. My personal feeling is the game is still moving too fast for him. Touch can be developed over time, accuracy is more difficult but still a learned skill IMO. If Heaps is plying like this at the end of next year or worse his Jr year he then could be considered Locker-lite.

His interception yesterday was the worst throw I can remember from a BYU QB. Can anyone remind memof a worse one to make me feel better about young Jake?

I know Ty threw some stinkers. However, his overall play made me forget any specifics. I hope I can say the same for Jake when his career is over.

This is a direct result of the number of drops our receivers had early in the year.

Heaps was told he could help the receivers out by making more adjustments on the velocity of his passes, and trying to be more flexible with his arm strength.

Now he's trying to train his arm to throw at speeds and velocities that are unnatural to him, while still maintaining accuracy at the speed of a Division I football game.

I might be proven wrong in the long run, but Heaps' accuracy is one of the few things that does NOT worry me about BYU's offense right now.

The fans don't want to turn on Doman but the evidence is starting to mount against Doman. Nelson had all last year to improve his throwing and didn't so we were stuck with a poor excuse for a JR QB and a true freshman. Then, Doman seems to have abandoned Nelson and put all of his effort into Heaps, who hasn't improved and isn't very accurate. I know it is more popular to blame Anae but I think Doman needs to get his share of the blame too.
