  • Doman's philsophy vs Anae's

Sorry for the new thread. I know some people get really upset over thread protocol.

There seems to be this accepted premise lately that Doman is behind the move to the I and the power game as seen in the SDSU game. I'm skeptical this is true. I don't know if it's true or not, as I haven't heard anything even small clues from the coaching staff on this.

My long standing assumption is that in the beginning Reynolds was more naturally inclined to power game, double TE, running, and old BYU stuff and Anae was more naturally inclined to the wide splits, shotgun, spread, multiple WR, TT kind of stuff. But over time they have blended together and I have no idea if this is still true and how Doman fits in.

    Any input on this?

All I know is that Anae implemented the Power I stuff early on in his BYU career. In fact, I believe we started seeing it after the SDSU debacle in 2005 but I might be mistaken. When your best 11 includes FB and two TEs then you run Power I. If we were doing a lot of effective option stuff, I would think Doman had a hand in that (since he knows option football). Power I versus spread is all Anae.

I think this change happened quickly after the first home game losing to BC with something like 80 pass attempts. I believe at the time, it was described as an intervention with Holmoe, Reynolds, and Bronco waiting in Robert's office with the credit mostly going to Reynolds.

Obviously a lot has changed since then, and maybe Anae's done a 180. I'm curious what the dynamics are what the inclinations are between Anae-Reynolds-Doman now. And what Doman would do if he were the boss. Everyone seems to be on the Doman for OC bandwagon right now, but I don't think anyone knows what he'd run.

Scheme is only a part of effective play calling. Timing, anticipation, and unpredictability are all other important parts. Regardless of what formations and packages are involved, I've felt that BYU has often been lacking in some of these departments.

There doesn't seem to be much information available to Joe fan. I don't know. I'm just so upset over the thread protocol that I can't think straight.

Yeah this is where I depart from most people. Even when I hated Crowton's guts at a deeply personal level, I never criticized him for things like timing, anticipation, unpredictability. I think those things are highly subjective, and really are only judged effectively in hindsight. Plus Doman is completely untested in those areas.

I thought it was later in the year on the flight back from SDSU. IIRC, we threw the ball a ton in all the early games and then Reynolds let Anae know that the best BYU teams had a more balanced run/pass distribution.

Yes, I didn't mean to imply it was after the first game. Might have been after SDSU. It was at some point between game 2 and game 6 or so, there was an appreciable change.

My understanding - which I don't think is authoritative - is that this move was that Bronco and Reynolds heavily influenced (almost forced) that shift.

                      Agree.

My big question is how are the philosophies today, five years later.

Jay, Ignore the thread Nazis (let me know and I will start deleting their complaints ). The last thing this site needs is to discourage sports posts. Particularly sports posts by posters who have proven they are interesting and don't suck.

OK maybe I exaggerate a little. I just never know whether to start a new thread or append my post to an existing thread.

Maybe there will be more sports posts if we discourage religious posting by deleting religion threads.

I am serious Jay (except for the deletion part, of course). You are one of biggest and best sports contributors on the board. If you want to start a new thread, then start a new thread. I don't want posters particularly good posters to think that there is some sort of board policy limiting thread creation. There simply isn't. IF you feel your post works better as a new thread then post it as a new thread.
