  • My cousin is up by 6 in the CA 11th

That's according to SurveyUSA in a district wide poll commissioned by CBS.

David Harmer is legit. I've known him my entire life and the only strike against him would be that I've never known him to have any strikes against him. He's damn smart, has unbreakable integrity, is funny and has an amazing family. His wife Elayne is among my favorite people and - as a multilingual Stanford law grad who also happens to be the lookalike sister of BYU's one true Miss America - she has a few things working in her favor.

If he wins this David has the potential to be the kind of leader - i.e. real intelligence, civil in discourse and as incorruptible as they come - that the Republican Party and America can use right now.

If any of you feel like checking it out and making a contribution pls do.

I wondered why this wasn't in the golf thread. I thought if he was up by six on the eleventh hole he almost had his opponent closed out.

Hah yeah I'm not sure golf is his strong suit and maybe that's just the vulnerability I've been looking for.

That's my district and he has our votes. It would be nice to have one Republican among the dozen congresspersons from the Bay Area.

It is my district too, and he has our votes as well. Several of my good friends have been very actively campaigning for him here.

Thanks man - and to the locals PAC and Soccer Mom.

Worth noting that this is a national election in some important ways. While David is personally socially conservative he has run entirely on an economic platform and plans to focus his legislative efforts on economic issues. The battle for fiscal responsibility is, in my view, the new culture war and it's one that he'll take on with energy and intelligence.

I noticed that when looking at his website. And I think its great. The social/cultural issues don't have much place in national politics anyway. Or, rather, they shouldn't.

Looks like a quality candidate. Best of luck, Ox.

I spent a little time in his ward and he is a very, very nice man. Truly genuine. But I wouldn't get all crazy and vote for him.

I remember when his dad John ran for the vacated Wayne Owens seat back in 1990. It was among the first GOP conventions I had ever attended. IIRC, he and Karl Snow made it out of convention into a primary but Snow handily took him down, much of it due to a character attack aimed at Harmer and some financial issues he was purported to have had. It was unfair of Snow and his negative campaign style caught up to him later when he was destroyed by Democrat Bill Orton by a 22-pt General Election victory. It seems almost unimaginable now that a Democrat could win that district, especially by such a blowout margin.

I voted for Orton almost entirely due to Snow's ridiculous tactics.

That's exactly what I was thinking of.

I looked at the district on realclearpolitics and it takes in quite a bit of the central valley along with a significant chunk of Contra Costa. My initial thought was this should be a GOP-leaning district and apparently the current incumbent was voted into that district in 2006 which was a very friendly year for the Dems. But Bush carried this district in both 2000 and 2004. Your cousin should probably easily win.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
