How can they continue to mess up instant replay?

The replay process is terrible. It's pretty easy to get the call right, but that's not what they're doing. There's a nebulous standard of irrefutable evidence. So they decide in 15 seconds what the right call is, and then spend five minutes wasting everyone's time determining if it's irrefutable or not, and then half the time end up screwing it up. Just ignore the play on the field and make the right call when you review it.

Hoke needs to knock off that truck driver "us-against-the-world" mentality. His team does not have the talent to capitalize on his motivation strategy. It never worked for Wyoming all those years they tried it either. It only works for Whittingham.

Also - how can they miss the two-handed, head-jerking face mask on JJ that immediately preceded the fumble (and probably contributed to the lack of concentration that caused the fumble).

One day people will realize how stupid replay is and all it does is destroy the flow of the game, for calls that still end wrong often. The day replay is cancelled in college football will be a great day.

Pretty funny that the MWC is saying the PI should have been a no call but the picture posted on CB last night makes it pretty obvious that it was indeed PI.

So what you're saying is "These rules suck!". I agree.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

San Diego surely would have won the game if not for this one missed call!

I liked the report from the call to the Reno deli.

I've got several years of experience as a basketball referee at a competitive level (although not DI), and I would venture that most referees feel that the weakness of the replay system is generally what you described. That being said, it's the best we've got right now and I'm confident it will get better with time. Having the current system of replay is definitely better than having no replay at all, IMO.

In defense of the referees, I will also say that I never understood just how drastically split second decisions can be botched based on a ton of different factors until I was in their shoes. I'd always heard people talk about it, but never understood it until I found myself in that situation. From my experience, I can testify that the number of calls the DI referees (even in the MWC) get exactly right is a tribute to their skill and experience, and is never fully appreciated by even the most educated of fans.

For all the whining that goes on about officials... one of their own gets suspended for his role in a botched call involving (benefitting) BYU.

Geez.... what's it take to win a football game around here?
