IMO, the one reason beating SDSU was so huge: It almost guarantees that BYU can successfully spin its "rebuilding" season.
BYU can now pencil four wins into the rest of their schedule (and ink in at least three of them).
They will have nothing to lose against TCU or Utah. A blowout loss will be meaningless. Anything better than that will be at least a moral victory.
As long as they beat a forgettable bowl opponent, they'll finish 7-6, having won six of their last eight games. Everyone will look back and say the November-December BYU would have beaten at least Utah State, and maybe Air Force or Nevada. The fickle fan base will have forgotten how bad those losses hurt.
Since all of the freshmen will have a whole year under their belts, optimism will abound for 2011. The stadium will be full once again come September. As long as they win 8-9 games the first year as an independent, the previous season will simply be passed off into history as nothing more than a speed bump.
The worst is over for BYU fans. The rest of the year is on the house.
