  • The Heisman race

Time for this week's Heisman rankings. I have Denard remaining slightly ahead, but he's come back to the pack in a big way, and #s 2-6 on this list are basically tied. This is shaping up to be a much better race than I expected.

    1. Denard Robinson – 17/29 for 217, 1, and 3; 21 carries for 84 and 1. He Looked quite ordinary today. He’s had issues with reading coverages and missing deep balls all season, and today it really bit him. He overthrew two sure TDs early, and missed what would have been a TD on his first interception due to an inaccurate throw. Two more interceptions due to frustration or trying to do too much, along with 4 drops by WRs, several bad zone reads (which he’s generally been good at this season), and an OL that got dominated in the running game adds up to a poor performance from Denard today. I still have him in first place for now, but this race just got very close.

    2. Cam Newton – 13/21 for 210, 0, and 1; 28 carries for 198 and 4. Huge game today, as he methodically got his team in position to kick the final FG to win. He didn’t throw it as well today as he usually does, having led the NCAA in QB rating before tonight, but he made up for it with his running. He’s a hard-nosed runner, more Tebow than Denard, and therefore seems more likely to hold up over the rest of the season.

    3. LaMichael James – 25 carries for 137 and 2, 2 catches for 88 and 1. Relatively quiet day for James. He had an impressive 84-yard TD reception, but 55 of his rushing yards were for naught due to losing a fumble at the end. Still, he's taken his place as the best RB in FBS.

    4. Terrelle Pryor – Great performance today. 24/30 for 335 and 3. He didn’t try to run once, and was sacked 3 times for a total of -19, but he was patient in the pocket and accurate for his less than 3 quarters of action. Indiana’s D isn’t good, but Pryor cut them up impressively.

    5. Taylor Martinez – 5 for 7 for 128 and 1, 15 carries for 241 and 4. He struggled against South Dakota State(!) last week, but turned things around this week for one of the better individual performances of the year against what seemed like a decent KSU defense. Competition has been weak, his passing lags well behind his rushing ability, and I don’t see him putting up numbers like this against the better Big 12 defenses, but this guy will push Denard for the premiere dual threat QB spot this year and next.

    6. Kellen Moore –16/22 for 268 and 3 against a terrible team. Yawn.

    7. Andrew Luck – Put together a very nice game today, leading his team to a win against a good USC team.

    8. Ryan Mallett – looked fine today, but after his game against Alabama he’ll need to do better.

    9. Matt Barkley – Will have a better shot next year, but has shown good improvement this season.

    10. Mark Ingram – Between looking mediocre for the second week in a row and his team finally losing, I don’t see Ingram having much of a shot now.

I'd put Pryor higher. OSU is No. 1, and that carries huge weight with the Heisman voters. If he outplays Robinson in the finale, and OSU finishes undefeated, the Heisman is his.

Cam Newton has a lot of big games left and from what I have seen is a beast. However Auburn always seems to be one of those schools that no matter how good they are, they always fly just below the radar.

I think the Heisman is still not that interested in freshman, so for Martinez to get really into the discussion Robinson is going to have to fall way off.

I agree that Pryor has a pretty clear path to victory here, and you'll note that I have Pryor basically tied for 2nd. Denard has put up much better numbers and in general has been much more impressive, but because OSU is so much better than Michigan overall, and because they face each other at the end of the year, and because Robinson has demonstrated the possibility that he won't be nearly as good against stout Big Ten defenses, I'd give Pryor a good shot to win it.

I'd guess Michigan ends up about 8-4. If they go 7-5 or worse, even if all the losses are crazy shootouts, I think Denard's chance to win goes away.

When was the last heisman winner to go 8-4? i think tebow had the lowest win total in a while, and was 9-3.

Before Ingram last year, one of the more interesting "Huh? Really?" college football factoids was that Auburn had a Heisman winner, while Alabama didn't. Now Alabama evens the score, but perhaps only for a year?

If Auburn and Ohio State both finish undefeated, this will be one of the closest Heisman races ever. I'm not sure what the Heisman allows in terms of splitting votes. Should be fun to watch.

Didn't Bo Jackson have one of the greatest years by any college RB ever that year? Are you saying that Auburn doesn't get glossed over by Alabama because of this one fact? Can you ever imagine an undefeated Alabama team not even being in the national title discussion, in fact being ranked behind a team from a non-AQ conference in the final poll?

Jackson's vote-margin was the closest in Heisman history to that point.

That Alabama clearly outclasses Auburn in history, prestige, accomplishments, etc. make my point exactly what it is, a "Huh? Really?" point. It would be akin to Scott Mitchell being the only Heisman winner from the state of Utah.

So far, looking at this list, while Pryor, Martinez and Robinson drop a few, Cam Newton and Matt Barkley rise a few spots.
                    I'm like LeBron James.

Early finish today for the candidates, so let's do this:

Weird day for the Heisman race. Two candidates were outperformed by their backups, and a third was benched in favor of someone even worse. The numbers are being pared down a bit finally.

                      1. Cam Newton – Very nice game today. Strong and patient running, efficient throwing when he had to. Not very flashy, and not as exciting to watch as Denard or Martinez, but very effective behind a very good offensive line.

                      2. Kellen Moore – Spent two quarters throwing perfect passes to wide-open receivers from an unmolested pocket. Yawn again.

                      3. LaMichael James – idle

                      4. Matt Barkley – Huge game vs cal today. Moving up.

                      5. Andrew Luck – idle

                      Out:
Terrelle Pryor – Did nothing to help his team in the first half, and was only marginally better in the second. He might get back in it, but I just don’t think he’s got the skills to win without the benefit of an undefeated team.

Taylor Martinez – Lame and then benched.

Ryan Mallett and – Mediocre before being injured, outplayed by the backup, who might have had the best day of any QB in the country before giving the game away late with two straight picks.

Denard Robinson – Same story as Mallett. DRob will still break some records this year and remains more fun to watch than most anybody on this list, but he makes too many mistakes.

Taylor Martinez might have had the most impressive performance of the day, but I can’t very well include him in this list a week after he got benched for nonperformance.

                        1. Cam Newton – Mediocre through the air, but huge day on the ground. He’s starting to pull away from the crowd a bit, although 2nd and 3rd place are hanging in there.

                        2. Kellen Moore – idle

                        3. LaMichael James – Average day for him, but impressive enough to keep his spot here.

                        4. Matt Barkley – idle

                        5. Andrew Luck – Plenty good enough to win against a miserable WSU team, but nothing spectacular.

                        6. Justin Blackmon – Has separated himself as the best WR in the nation; unfortunately, the Heisman is a QB/RB award.

                        7. Terrelle Pryor – Reenters the list this week after an efficient performance against an overmatched Purdue team. Two interceptions won’t help his cause, however.

Cam Newton ran away with it today. It's over.

                            unless they lose.

Tough to argue against it, even if Auburn finishes 11-1 and doesn't win the SEC. Maybe LaMichael James or Kellen Moore get some first-place votes, but I'm not sure anyone else is even in the discussion right now.
