  • Do we recruit safeties?

These are the DB's on the roster

    **Landon*Fowler***
    **Jray*Galea'i***
    **Levi*Gifford***
    **Cole*Herrmann***
    **Landon*Jaussi***
    **Mitchell*Juergens***
    **Greg*May***
    **Carter*Mees***
    **Zeke*Mendenhall***
    **Chase*Pendley***
    **Andrew*Rich***
    **Steven*Thomas***
    **Dalin*Tollestrup***
    **Travis*Uale***
    **Jake*Webber***

I don't know some of the names listed as DB, so I might have the divide wrong between S and CB, but I think this is it.

How many of these guys did not originally come as walk-on's? I know Galeai was a scholarship recruit. Anyone else?

The loss of Shiloah Te'o hurts the safety depth, also Craig Bills leaving on a mission hurt as well.

If we had Te'o, Bills, Rich, and Thomas we have plenty of depth.

Jay you seem to be jumping off a cliff with this most recent loss, step back from the edge we will be alright.

Craig Bills was a top 5 safety recruit, but he went on a mission.

Nah, this is just where I vent.

On this safety issue, I think Bronco thinks that's a special position because he was a safety and a walk on. I don't think that attitude is serving him well. Safety should be a stronger position for us relative to CB, given the demographics and our history.

What's going on with Galeai? He was a guy I've really anticipated and thought would be a great safety for us.

I said on Saturday that Bronco is trying to get the guys on the field that play assignment football, but those guys are not doing that. So put your athletes on the field and hopefully they can cover up any mistakes they make with their athleticisim.

Galea'i and Thomas are the only two who had scholarship offers from that list. I think Rich knew he'd get the first available scholly when he committed to us as a preferred walk-on as he had offers from both Boise State and Cal.

Jray has been a beast on kickoff coverage and is slated to replace Rich at SS next year. With how well Eason has played, I would love to see he and Logan start at corner with Bradley sliding over to FS. They played Rich at FS to start Saturday's game with Zeke Mendenhall getting the start at SS. Why not do the same with Galea'i if you want your best athletes on the field?

I agree, in fact Zeke played linebacker at Snow, he is not fast. So basically we put a 5th linebacker on the field against a team that is already faster and more athletic than we are. Let's go slower! Always a great idea.

Bronco was not a walk on at OSU.

However, his safety recruiting has not been impressive. He has landed some solid recruits, but not enough.

I also do not buy the mission justification. Who was surprised when Craig Bills went on a mission? All the better if he had stayed, but when he was a junior in high school and it was common knowledge he was coming to BYU, and very likely to head on a mission after his freshman yet, I hope he was not on some dry erase board as a safety for the 2010 season.

Bronco is a great head coach, but I think he should be able to put better safeties on the field than he did in '08 and '10. I am willing to give him '08 for no other reason than I am reasonable but by his 6th year as the HC I believe he should have better options than what he has.
