Usually it's funny to head over to CB to watch the meltdowns, but I wasn't expecting to see it over here this morning. Welcome to hell!
I've been saying all year that we were probably going to start the season 1-3 and we'll be fortunate to have a winning record this year. I also think next year we are going to dominate a bunch of people and in two years we are going to be competing for a BCS spot again.
I think this year's struggles are due to a whole bunch of factors, but I'll rank them in what I believe is their order of importance.
1. QB situation
2. Unga loss
3. DL & LB problems
4. Mismanagement of the offensive system
2,573. Playcalling vs. Nevada
Let me focus on #4 and #2,573. We should not have been giving the two QB's equal reps in two totally different systems. If both guys were both the same style, it wouldn't be a huge problem, but to force the rest of the offense to learn two different systems is a recipe for disaster. Not enough practice time in college to execute two systems effectively. You gotta get max reps in one system to execute that system well. After one practice in the spring, everyone in the world knew Riley was not going to be able to throw the ball in our system. We should have given the job to Heaps after one week of spring ball. That said, we showed signs of life against Nevada so I think we'll be a lot better in a month than we are now.
Criticizing the play calling against Nevada is like criticizing Lindsay Lohan for the color of eye shadow she's wearing. There are a thousand other things to worry about first. I actually walked out of the stadium praising our play calling and game plan. We tried to keep things very basic and simple. Heaps has a good arm, but no experience. Therefore, let's keep the reads simple and let him try to get the ball up the sideline to McKay, Ashworth and Hoffman. Run play action for max protection and one man routes for simple reads. The only bad call was the run on 4th down. And that was a really dumb call. But I thought everything else was excellent.
Let's keep a clear head. For the next four years we are going to have Heaps, Quezada, and Hoffman. Big help is coming at LB. We are going to be really good beginning next year.
