  • Linemen size

I noticed FSU's linemen averaged less than 300 and they were nimble. We haven't had a line average less than 300 since the 90's. Is this a problem? Which is the better Brown body type, Terence or Braden? Should we be feeding them chicken breast or jelly donut? Speaking of Braden, he was listed at 250 last year and 300 this year. Is that possible?

We need Alani Fua on the Braden Brown diet.

Seems like most coaches are pushing their linemen to gain weight to get over 300. It has been mentioned that Kyle at the U wants his linemen to get over 300. I think there's got to be some weight where gaining more fat is counter-productive, but I have no idea where that is. Apparently the coaches don't think it is under 300. And yes, we are just talking about fat here.

I am not sure if BYU's lineman would be that much more athletic at 295 than they are at 320.

If I had my choice my choice would be athletic 300 lbers. I think if the coaches had their choice it would be that way as well - if the guys can still pass block as well. BYU's OL have historically been amongst the biggest in college football for 20+ years - this trend has gone with BYU's pass happy offense. When the OL you reference was below 300, it was still 20+ lbs heavier than most of the other D1 teams.

I think that BYU's system is a balanced one where the pass sets up the run. The primary duty of the OL is to pass block and in that case I think the coaches like the kids bigger and better able to take a beating. Pass blocking is more reactionary and dependent than run blocking - which seeks for the initiative. The years BYU runs the ball well the OL is a big part, but I think the QB forcing teams to respect much of the field is as big a part off that success. My guess is the coaches believe that the benefit of heavier lineman outweighs whatever mobility would be gained if they were 20 lbs lighter. My guess is they will be wrong a lot this year, but right a lot more next year. The kicker is it is likely to be with all of the same guys on the OL.

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I have always thought that BYU's offensive lineman were way to big. The ideal size for a lineman IMO is between 300 and 310.

According to my wife lots of people, size doesn't matter.

Opposing DE is trying to get to a spot 4 yards away. That spot is three feet away from our OT. I'd like a guy who can beat the DE to that spot. Would dropping 20 lbs of baby fat help the OT get to that spot? Not sure.

I think there has been a movement to get longer and skinnier.

Saying that, I missed most of the AF game and the first half of the FSU game. But from what I have seen from BYU the OL is not the problem. I thought the majority, if not all, of the sacks Heaps took was because he held the ball too long. He just doesn't know the offense well enough yet and has to think too long.

Maybe some on the QB's but a lot has to be on the OL. And I thought there was a movement to get longer and thinner also, with this new OL coach, but this year outside of B Brown, they are tubs.

If you look at the tackles who are being taken at the top of the first round, none of them look like Terrence Brown who looks like he just stepped out of a casting session for the starring role in Gordie's story from Stand By Me.

                      Here's Russell Okung:

Here's the guy the Dolphins took #1 a few years ago:

Of course, not everyone can be a high first round LT draft pick, but it seems like most o-linemen in the NFL aren't anywhere close to as fat as some of BYU's o-linemen.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Terrence Brown has never played tackle so that might have something to do with him not looking like those guys.

Andre Smith is essentially on his way out with the Bengals and has been lambasted by Marvin Lewis for failing to stay in shape. He has tremendous athletic ability but his weight (amongst other things) is holding him back.

Mike Iupati was drafted in the first round by the Niners. Here's what he looks like:

And aren't guards typically leaner than tackles?

                              Here's Steve Hutchinson:
