  • BYU's biggest problem

It's not our 1-2 start nor our QB controversy. It's not the success of Utah, TCU and BSU. Our problem isn't religious bias or lingering race-related issues.

Our biggest problem is that our timing absolutely sucks...a few examples. "Quest for perfection." We came off an 11-2 season with a sophomore QB and the sky looked like the limit. We got pieces on ESPN, we printed t-shirts, our general-authority-to-be head coach talked about it on the radio....and then we played TCU. And suddenly, we all saw the Quest for what it was. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have a perfect record, but printing t-shirts (complete with all the religious underpinnings of the statement)?? Timing fail.

In 2001 (I was on my mission for a good part of this season), we start the season undefeated. It appears we won't get an at-large bid to the BCS. The papers are filled with rumors of lawsuits and the injustice of the BCS. Last game of the season (a gimme, right?) against Hawai'i and we don't just lose, we get schilacked, shamed, athletically terrorized. We follow that up with an embarrassing loss to C-USA powerhouse Louisville in the Liberty Bowl. Ouch.

In 2010, we shake up the CFB world by going independent. We give our players the exposure they need by signing a deal with ESPN and getting rights to broadcast worldwide on BYUtv. We want to demonstrate to the PAC-10s and Big-12s of the world that we can go solo and make more money and be on TV just as much as any national powerhouse. But our team is struggling with a QB controversy and we're having trouble replacing some of the most dynamic offensive football players in our program's history. So, on national TV, we get schilacked by FSU.

All this being said, I think we have a great tradition (probably still better than Utah's, but if they keep things up, in ten years we'll be singing a different tune) and a great football program, but could our timing be any worse? Sometimes, I think not.

Timing isn't the problem. The problem is BYU is rarely as good as we think they are.

When would have been better timing for Quest for Perfection?

The answer may be "never." At least on the scale it was done. Going undefeated is always an implied goal, but if you're going to go public with it, you'd better be sure that you're better than every team you're playing.

See, if Bronco had gone with more of a "Be Ye Therefore Perfect, Even as I Am" theme then nobody would've talked about anything on the field...

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

The problem is that there are some people that actually believe, no they actually "know" God gives a shit about how BYU does and therefor he will help BYU achieve the level of success others have who have to do what it takes to achieve that success.

It's like the guy who pays his tithing and expects to make as much money working a 30 hour week as the guy who works an 80 hour week who doesn't pay tithing.

Or that such a slogan doesn't look better on your rival than it does yourself.

And I'm not sure going undefeated is an implied goal for a lot of programs. Chris Peterson said it isn't at Boise State -- although that might be because Boise has done it so many times, it's not worth talking about. For most schools, whether that's out of respect for the competition, or that there's so many games to be played (which wouldn't preclude it from being an implied goal) is another matter.

But most traditional powers know that by winning the conference and winning out on the road, they'll be almost certainly better than 50/50 to be playing for a national championship. That's the ultimate goal -- whether you get there with none, one or even two losses is irrelevant.

Some BYU fans still have dreams of winning the national championship. They know the only way to do that is to first go undefeated. They also know it's been done before, so it's not impossible. But it's still a warped sense of perspective, not because it's not possible at BYU, but because many other schools can still get the brass ring even with a loss.

No, I was just expressing my opinion. I don't "think" it is true, but there are those who "know" it is true.

How about a Quest for Reflection? Something BYU needs more than anything.

IMO there is never a good time for that kind of thing. Imagine the pressure that placed on the Cougars that year. Also, by saying something like that you put a HUGE target on your back (right?)....

Just on a side note, I watched a different cut of "Undefeated" (recap of 2008 Utah undefeated season) called "Second to None", and in the beginning Kyle Whittingham said something like "I never talk about going undefeated". A minute later it showed Whitt displaying all of Utah's goals that year on a powerpoint to the team. Two of the goals: Go undefeated- play in the "big" one. Always thought that was funny.

I don't think theres anything wrong with the coach of a good team talking up a potential undefeated season with his team. But when you take that to the media and print t-shirts proclaiming it, you've crossed a line in my opinion.

I wonder about BYU. I wonder when and if they'll ever be a national power again. I still think they would've been better off staying in the MWC playing teams like TCU, Boise, and Air Force every year.

One of BYU's biggest problems is having a bunch of pussies for fans.
