  • Official Ute thread

Seeing as that the last 20 or so threads, outside of the obligatory Utah/New Mexico game thread, are all about BYU, I thought I'd start a new thread.

Now, in seeing that every good thread has to have inflammatory remarks to keep it going, I'll start:

Jordan Wynn was a much better QB with the 'stache than he is without it.

Utah sucks. Pitt was overrated. Yewtah will get killed by Air Force. Lark, Munns, Heaps, and Nelson are all much better quarterbacks than Jordan Wynn or Terrance Cain.

I'd like to see the U. cutdown on turnovers.

Ball security seems to be a big problem for this team.

Also, the defense is not great, at this point, in creating turnovers.

I'm pleased with the punt and kick return teams. Our placekicking appears to be solid. I'm happy to see the punting look better yesterday and I hope it continues throughout the season and against better opposition.

The offense appears to have the ability to pile on points in bunches. I hope they can do that when needed.

Robles running ability was eye-opening in that game.

Did anyone else notice how high that UNM punter's kicks were going? I don't know if you could appreciate that on TV.

The fumbling is probably the biggest negative I can think of, which, while is quite a big problem, is impressive given the fact that we're missing our starting QB, starting center, as well as one of our most experienced LB's.

I heard on the radio yesterday that the Utes are rotating 11 defensive linemen. That's pretty unbelievable and is a testament to the depth that we've slowly been building. As a matter of fact, when I look across the whole team, it seems like OLine, LB, and DB are the only positions where it seems we have a dropoff in talent with the 2nd and 3rd stringers.

I watched the Utes and pulled for them against Pitt. Let me know when they play another game that would be worth me watching.

Please don't take offense, I am a Y fan, so I am sure you can see why I am not interested until you play someone decent again.

              October 30th, against Air Force.

I have always felt Robles would be a star at qb. I'd like to see him throw the ball. Clearly he's a beast. That he's still in that position with all that strength and athleticism, and Utah fairly deep at qb says a lot. Biding his time. Next year he's a soph only, and only a sprained thumb away from being at the helm. . . . I like patient people.

Robles looked big on TV compared to the other players. I like what I saw and think his future is bright.

With all the talk about the young runners that Utah's got backlogged at safety, I think it's interesting that there's a walk on by the name of Chappuis at safety on the travelling squad. Number 19, I think. He's becoming a bit of a special teams hero, but he laid a hellacious lick in el tiempo del garbajo from the safety spot.

We hear a lot about Spikes, Washington, Bird, and the other all star freshmen that haven't played, but I haven't heard even a dimple of chatter about Chappuis. He seems like the kind of dude that we will get to know very well. A freshman, walk on, pasty, french sounding, hardworking overachiever from Utah County. I guarantee we will hear more from this particular monsieur.

I hope he's OK after that hit. He walked back to the bench and seemed a bit dazed. I didn't see if he played after that. I agree, it was a hellacious hit.

71's comments are why I'm trying my hardest to savor this season. When we join the PAC-10 next year, there will never again be a stretch of games like this that feature so few bowl teams.

There's potential for Utah to "underachieve" at 8-4 just because seemingly bad teams like ASU and UCLA will capitalize on an uninspired/sloppy performance, whereas CSU and UNM will roll over after the opening kickoff.

But to tack on more negative sentiment about last night, I was hoping for more from the ground game.

Looking at all 3 QBs standing down on the field, Robles is bigger than Cain and appears larger and more physically mature than Wynn.

                            I totally agree.

The ground game has been disappointing thus far in the season. Not what I would have expected from such a veteran, talented and proven O-line and RB corps.

                              It's true!!

I really like what this kid has shown us so far. He was our leading rusher with 64 yards last night! I remember watching him in the spring game- kids a stud- he was throwing the ball 50 yards through the air. I'd be interested to see how he performs against tougher competition. Someone mentioned to me that he is just NOT the right fit for the spread.
