I assume he was the USU back in '82, one of the years USU beat BYU. I recall some of you folks mentioning that game. I think the consistent hits on Steve Young was everyone's memory, but do any recall Maurice Turner at runningback?
Really interesting story.

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I was at BYU in 1982 and had some friends from HS at Utah State. The BYU game in Logan was their homecoming game so one of my friends invited me and my roommate to come up for the game and to attend homecoming (they lined us up with blind dates). We had seats near the 50-yd line and I looked forward to a typical BYU thrashing of the aggies. Imagine my horror as I watched that game slip away. Then I had to endure an entire evening of ribbing. My date was cute, but her laugh sounded like a machine gun. One of the longest days of my life.

I remember that game - like the Dude, I was in attendance with friends who had invited me - and I vaguely recall Turner having a good game, though as you point out, what I rmember most is seeing Young getting knocked on his kiester pretty much every play.
It was an awesome game.

Nancy Kehl had three children when she decided she wanted a fourth—a half-white, half-black baby girl the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' adoption program couldn't place.
Mrs. Kehl says she found out soon after the adoption why that might have been the case: Her neighbors told her that her children could no longer come over. Still, four years later, there were three more biracial Kehls: Bryan, Kortney and Ed
Great story.
It is bothering to think neighbors would discourage their kids from playing with children, with what seems like a great LDS family, just because of their race.

Really dumb. The Kehl's are loaded. Gary has done really well for himself with Megadyne.

It was the 80's. When I was on my mission in the late 60's we were instructed that if a black person answered the door we were to ask them survey questions and NOT to ask them if they wanted to learn about the church.
My Dad wondered why I came back off my mission not as sympathetic to racial issues as he had taught me. We got into some pretty good back and forths. He would tell me I had a crappy attitude and by golly he was right.
I thought it was also interesting that the bioligical mother is having a lot more trouble connecting than his father. I also think that has something to do with her upbringing. In the LDS culture, I think there are some who feel it is better to be raped than have consentual sex. Yea, I will take a shot at the honor code here. The honor code and it's enforcement enhances that kind of thinking.
Lastly, one of my good friends played offensive tackle at USU at that time. I sent him the article. He loved it and said Turner was a very good player.

Agree, especially when you consider that he was born in '84. We're talking about people in the 1990's acting that way?
My brother went to High School with Maurice and played on the soph football team with him. He says that he was a nice guy back then. FWIW that was a very good HS football team - BYU got a couple of d-line starters off of it

I don't want to judge her, but it was difficult not doing so while reading this. My guess is that her current kids never knew about her past and having to deal with that was probably not what she wanted. Tough spot to be in.

I really don't think it has much to do with upbringing as there are plenty of people who feel as this mother does who are not members. Like Coach this is something I will have to deal with someday. Except I know my daughter's biological dad and he's a douchebag.
